Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 15 Jan 2011 23:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0500 UTC January 16 2011.

The most significant cloud feature in the vicinity of the main Hawaiian islands is a northeast through southwest oriented cold front that is moving eastward at around 15 mph. The cloud band associated with the front is about 400 miles wide. The front consists of mainly layred clouds which are streaming along to the northeast. A few isolated thunderstorms are also present along the leading edge of the front mainly north of 24°N.

Low clouds over and around the state were rather stable looking with clouds tops up to between 5000 and 6000 feet. Kauai was mostly cloudy with a band of clouds extending southward over the adjacent coastal waters. Just a few patches of low clouds are seen over the slopes and summits of the Koolau range. Over Molokai a few patches of low clouds can be seen over the eastern half of the island while Lanai was mostly clear. Over Maui low clouds are banked up over portions of the Haleakala slopes as well as over the slopes and summits of the west Maui mountains. Over the Big Island low clouds are banked up over the windward slopes from north Kohala southward through the Hilo and Puna districts. Low clouds are also present over portions of the Kona and Kau slopes.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 15 Jan 2011 18:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0000 UTC January 16 2011.

Weak ridging at the surface and aloft over the main Hawaiian islands is being slowly eroded by an upper level trough and cold front approaching from the west.

A stalled surface ridge extends from 30°N 140°W to the southwest near Kauai at 22°N 160°W. With the ridge nearby, low clouds in the trade wind flow were travelling from the east at 15 mph near the Big Island, decreasing to around 10 mph and veering out of the east southeast near Molokai and Oahu, then sharply turning out of the southwest at 10 mph near Kauai as the flow rounds the ridge.

Cloud cover is following a typical trade wind pattern on the Big Island, while a sea breeze pattern dominates across the rest of the state. Broken low clouds cover most slopes of the Big Island below 6000 ft. Patches of broken low clouds are observed covering the terrain on Maui county and Oahu, while broken to overcast low clouds blanket all but the north shore of Kauai. Few to scattered low clouds are noted over waters around the central islands. Meanwhile, a 200 mile-wide area of broken low clouds extends 275 miles south of the Big Island, and a narrow, prefrontal band of mainly stable, broken low clouds runs across Kauai from the northeast to southwest.

An extremely strong, low latitude, and zonal, or west to east flowing, west Pacific jet stream runs along 30°N to 165°W then turns to the northeast. The jet stream is driving a cold front that covers the islands from laysan to just northwest of Nihoa. The 300 mile-wide band of layered clouds marking the front stretches from 30°N 158°W to 24°N 170°W to 20°N 180°. This feature is moving to the east at nearly 15 mph east of 170°W and has stalled to the west.

To the south of the jet stream, weak ridging aloft is hanging on over the main Hawaiian islands. To the southeast of the islands, the upper level flow dives into a weak, elongated, nearly stationary upper low centered near 14°N 144°W. The upper low is triggering isolated towering cumulus cells or thunderstorms with tops to 33000 ft in the area from 16°N to 10°N between 149°W and 145°W. Farther south, this feature is enhancing convection within the ITCZ south of 10°N east of 150°W.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 15 Jan 2011 12:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1800 UTC January 15 2011.

Weak ridging at the surface and aloft is hanging on over the main Hawaiian islands, while a cold front approaches from the west.

Overnight ascat data showed a surface ridge extending from 30°N 140°W to the southwest across Oahu to 15°N 180°. With the ridge over the state drifting slowly north, a low level trade wind flow was building over Oahu and Maui county and was well-established over the Big Island. Individual low clouds are travelling from the east at almost 15 mph near the Big Island and Maui, decreasing to less than 10 mph around Molokai and Oahu, then veering out of the south at 5 mph near Kauai as the flow rounds the ridge.

Cloud cover is scant on most islands this morning as overnight land breezes have overpowered the background flow. Small patches of broken low clouds are noted across windward portions of Maui and Molokai, while Oahu and windward Big Island are mostly free of low clouds. Cloud cover is greater than normal on leeward Big Island, where broken low clouds cover the lower slopes and coast from Kawaihae to Milolii. On Kauai, the southerly flow has produced broken low clouds along the southern coast and slopes from Lihue to Waimea. With the exception of an area of broken low clouds west of the Big Island, low clouds are mainly scattered in coverage over Hawaiian waters. Cloud cover increases markedly to the east and northeast of the Big Island, where a field of stable, broken stratocumulus dominates.

An extremely strong, low latitude, and zonal, or west to east flowing, west Pacific jet stream runs along 30°N to 165°W then turns to the northeast. The jet stream is driving a cold front that covers the islands from necker to laysan. The 300 mile-wide frontal band stretches from 30°N 160°W to 23°N 168°W to 19°N 180° and is moving to the east at 15 mph. This feature is marked by overcast layered clouds and isolated, embedded thunderstorms with tops to 32000 ft north of 23°N and is comprised by broken low clouds south of 23°N.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 15 Jan 2011 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC January 15 2011.

An area of overcast layered clouds bounded by a line from 37°N 140°W to 30°N 152°W to 35°N 155°W to 44°N 144°W to 37°N 140°W remains the most noticeable cloud feature across the central north Pacific. This cloud area extends east of 140°W to the us mainland. Merging with this cloud area is a 300 mile wide band of overcast layered clouds north of a line from 44°N 144°W to 35°N 170°W to 42°N 180°W. A ragged 300 mile wide band of broken to overcast layered clouds extends north and west of a line from 30°N 152°W to 26°N 160°W to 21°N 170°W to 19°N 180°W. This cloud band marks a cold front which is moving toward the southeast at 15 mph. Isolated cumulonimbus, CB, are embedded within the frontal cloud band north of 23°N. The leading edge of the frontal cloud band is about 270 miles northwest of Kauai.

Low clouds are rather sparse southeast of the frontal cloud band, including across local Hawaiian waters. A broad anticyclonic circulation, the subtropical ridge, is noted along an axis roughly along a line from 26°N 140°W to 22°N 154°W to 20°N 165°W. Cloud cover is generally scattered north of 10°N, southeast of the frontal cloud band, and west of 152°W. A field of broken stable low clouds has spread west to 152°W overnight. Water vapor loop shows a strong jetstream west of the frontal cloud band along 30°N, associated with a band of clearing and subsidence just west of the frontal cloud band.

The subtropical ridge lies across the main Hawaiian islands, with light to moderate easterly flow noted near the Big Island and light southerly flow noted near Kauai. A weak low cloud band extends south southwest from Kauai within an area of local low level convergence. Cloud tops are warm here and radar shows almost no associated shower activity. Broken low clouds cover the southwestern half of Kauai, while Oahu has scattered low clouds to clear skies. Patchy broken low clouds cover skies across the islands of Maui county. The Big Island has broken to overcast low clouds across windward slopes south from Hilo, wrapping southwest across Kau district, then scattered to broken skies up the Kona side from Milolii to Captain Cook. Broken low clouds are also noted across windward Kohala slopes.

                              CITY MEETS WITH WASTE

              MANAGEMENT ON STORMWATER ISSUES

(Fri., Jan. 14, 2011)The City and County of Honolulu and the Department of Environmental Services (ENV) met today with Waste Management of Hawaii (WM), the operator of the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill (WGSL), to discuss issues resulting from a 100-year storm event earlier in the week and the temporary closure of Oahu's only municipal solid waste landfill.

The WGSL has been closed for three days and expected to be closed till Jan. 22.  As a result of its closure, City Convenience Centers will be accepting only burnable household waste, along with green waste, tires, car batteries and appliances.  During the same time frame, residents are asked to set out only metal appliances for bulky item pick up and restore all other bulky waste back on their property until further notice.

"We are asking for the public's assistance in reducing those waste streams until further notice," said ENV Director Tim Steinberger, "and the City will continue to provide its normal refuse collection."

Meanwhile, the WGSL will remain closed until the accumulated stormwater is removed and the affected areas are able to resume operations.

City and County of Honolulu News Releases

You are here:  Main / Customer Services / Public Communications Division / 2011 / DEM: Hazardous High Surf Expected This Weekend

Department of Emergency Management urges residents to be cautious of hazardous high surf over the weekend

(Fri., Jan. 14, 2011)—The National Weather Service in Honolulu advised the Department of Emergency Management that extremely hazardous high surf could pose a threat to Oahu's north and west facing shores beginning Saturday evening and peaking on Sunday. North and west shore surf heights could reach 20 to 30-feet.

Additionally, an almost 2-foot high tide early Sunday morning could combine to increase the coastal flooding potential, cause damage to homes located on or near affected beaches, create road closures and other problems and hazards.

The Department of Emergency Management urges everyone to be aware of the following high surf precautions and actions:

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid affected beach areas and to comply with life safety instructions issued by Ocean Safety Lifeguards, police and other emergency responders.

Beach goers should stay well out of the water, away from peninsulas and reef areas over looking the ocean and be aware of sudden hazardous changes in ocean behavior.

Motorists driving along affected shores should exercise caution as roads can become blocked with sand and debris. In addition, motorists should also be cautious of pedestrians crossing roads or highways to view the surf.

Campers at county, state or private facilities located on the shoreline should be aware of and ready to respond to high surf hazards.

Consider measures to protect your property and prepare to evacuate to a safer location if necessary. Listen to your radio or television for specific emergency information and instructions.

If you have a high surf related emergency call 9-1-1 immediately.

The Department of Emergency Management will be actively coordinating response actions with county, state and non-government organizations such as the American Red Cross.

Department staff and emergency responders are on stand-by and prepared to activate and staff the City's Emergency Operations Center if needed. Emergency Management Reserve Corps volunteers may be activated to assist with traffic control, warning and other duties.

Based on data through 0000 UTC January 15 2011.

Stability is gradually increasing as ridging aloft builds over the main Hawaiian islands. Meanwhile, a very strong low is affecting Midway atoll and is dragging a front over maro reef.

An extremely strong, low latitude, and zonal, or west to east flowing, west Pacific jet stream is running along 30°N as far east as 170°W, .then turns to the northeast. This jet stream is supporting a storm force low only 600 miles northeast of Midway atoll. Scattered to locally broken cumulus and towering cumulus clouds with tops as high as 22000 ft are racing across Midway from the west in a postfrontal flow. The associated front lies over maro reef about 325 miles southeast of Midway, or 525 miles northwest of Kauai. The ragged front is marked by a 175 mile-wide band of broken layered clouds along 30°N 162°W, 26°N 169°W, and 20°N 180°. To the north of 26°N, isolated thunderstorms rise to 33000 ft along the front, which is travelling to the east at 35 to 40 mph north of 26°N and east around 15 mph to the south.

The main Hawaiian islands lie under a southerly low-level flow ahead of the front. A weak prefrontal convergence band of low clouds has been parked over Kauai through the day, covering the garden isle with broken low clouds. Southerly flow is producing broken low clouds along the south shore of Oahu. Across Maui county, patches of broken low clouds are found across higher terrain. On the Big Island, sea breezes have produced broken low clouds over most low and middle slopes, with the exception of windward Puna. Stability is gradually returning as upper level ridging builds over the islands. Aside from the convergence band near Kauai, few to scattered low clouds are observed across adjacent waters.

Based on data through 1800 UTC January 14 2011.

Cloud cover is generally decreasing and stability is slowly increasing over the main Hawaiian islands. Meanwhile, a very strong low is affecting Midway atoll and is dragging a front over laysan island.

An extremely strong, low latitude, and zonal, or west to east flowing, west Pacific jet stream is running along 30°N as far east as 170°W, .then turns to the northeast. This jet stream is supporting a storm force low only 450 miles north of Midway atoll. Scattered to locally broken cumulus clouds are racing across Midway from the west in a prefrontal flow. The associated front lies over laysan island about 275 miles southeast of Midway, or 625 miles northwest of Kauai. The ragged front is marked by a 200 mile-wide band of broken layered clouds from 30°N 165°W to 25°N 173°W, then becomes dominated by low clouds to 21°N 180°. The front is travelling to the east at 35 to 40 mph.

The main Hawaiian islands lie under a southerly low-level flow ahead of the front. A narrow band of prefrontal convergence with tops over 20000 ft is draped over Kauai and the Kauai channel. As a result, the garden isle is covered with broken low clouds. Although Oahu is just east of this feature, moisture remains high with precipitable water values over 1.5 inches, and broken low clouds cover much of the island. Cloud cover diminishes to the east. Patches of broken low clouds are found on the higher terrain of west and east Molokai. The rest of Maui county is mostly clear. On the Big Island, stable stratocumulus clouds moving up from the southeast, producing small areas of broken low clouds over Kau and Puna. Stability is gradually returning as upper level ridging builds over the islands.

Elsewhere, prefrontal convergence north of the main Hawaiian islands is producing isolated thunderstorms which have decreased in coverage this morning. Isolated thunderstorms rise to 35000 ft north of 24°N between 161°W and 152°W.

Fri, 14 Jan 2011 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC January 14 2011.

Two cloud bands, both associated with unstable weather, were moving further away from the state early this Friday morning. One band, 180-200 miles wide and associated with a dissipating and departing front, had moved east of the Big Island. This broken to overcast layered cloud band was centered along a line through 30°N 144°W to 19°N 152°W. The west edge of this band was now about 80 miles east of the Big Island and it continued to drift slowly eastward. A few isolated thunderstorms remaining in this band were forming north of 25°N.

The second cloud band of similar width, was centered along a line from 30°N 152°W to 26°N 153°W to 24°N 158°W. This band contained mostly broken low clouds along its west edge with overcast layered clouds and scattered thunderstorms along the east half. Tops of the storms were near 38000 to 40000 feet. This band just north of the state was moving toward the northeast.

The Big Island was still mostly cloudy overnight. But the rest of the state saw dramatic decrease in cloudiness including over the surrounding waters. The patches of low clouds near the state were now clearly visible due to the exit of the higher clouds aloft. The low clouds near the Big Island were moving northwestward while the low clouds elsewhere around the state were flowing due north.

The next approaching front extended through 30°N 172°S to 26°N 180°E. Its associated low pressure system was centered near 33°N 179°E. The low and the front were moving east at 40 to 45 miles an hour. A large amount of broken to overcast cirrus clouds were spewing out ahead of the front, coming to within 215 miles northwest of Kauai this morning.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Thu, 13 Jan 2011 23:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0500 UTC January 14 2011.

A remnant front was nearly indiscernible in the vicinity of the Hawaiian islands this evening. But it appeared to be hidden beneath a nearly 300 miles wide band of broken to overcast layered clouds extending north-northeast from the Big Island. The west edge of this cloud band extended through 30°N 150°W to the north tip of the Big Island. The band was drifting slowly eastward. Isolated thunderstorms remained embedded within the cloud band. A couple of storms were recently noted over the east tip of the Big Island.

Another narrower band of broken to overcast low clouds north of Kauai was drifting northward. This northeast to southwest oriented band ranged from 80 to 135 miles wide and was centered between 31°N 151°W and 20°N 166°W. Isolated thunderstorms were also forming along this band along a line from 23.5°N 160°W to 26°N 155°W.

A rather ill-defined upper level trough was skirting the area just north of the state and keeping the air mass unstable. The trough axis extended through 30°N 151°W to 21°N 155.5°W. The trough was migrating eastward near 25 miles an hour.

While the eastern two thirds of the Big Island was cloudy to mostly cloudy around sunset, the rest of the state had partly cloudy skies mixed in with some mostly cloudy and mostly clear areas.
