Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 12 Jan 2011 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC January 12 2011.

Broken to overcast layered clouds are over all the Hawaiian islands this morning, as a front approaches from the northwest, and deep moisture approaches from the south and southwest. With the extensive layered clouds over the islands, low cloud details are difficult to identify. Deep convective clouds are moving toward the north- northeast at about 25 mph over waters to the south-southwest of the islands from Maui to Kauai, with the leading edge of the heavy rain currently about 70 miles south of these islands. The tops of these clouds are near 40 thousand feet, based on cloud top temperatures near -55 degrees celsius.

Between the islands and 170°W, from 18°N through 30°N, lies a wide swath of broken to overcast layered clouds, with embedded heavy showers, associated with a surface front and associated trough aloft. Water vapor imagery indicates a sharpening trough aloft about 550 miles northwest of Kauai, along a line from 30°N 167°W to 22°N 170°W, moving east at 35 to 40 mph.
