Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Mon, 10 Jan 2011 06:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 1130 UTC January 10 2011.

High cloudiness has become an overcast layer above the aloha state this early morning. The clouds are moving rapidly from the west and northwest, and are associated with an approaching weather system.

The cirrus shield is blocking a view of the lower levels. However, radar data and surface observations indicate most areas around the islands are clear to partly cloudy below the high clouds as of bulletin time. Based on radar wind profiles, low clouds are moving from the south to southwest across the state, at 10 to 15 mph near the Big Island and Maui county, and increasing to 20 to 30 mph moving up the chain to Oahu and Kauai.

A front is approximately 300 miles west-northwest of Kauai and continues to move toward the east and southeast at 20 to 30 mph. Ahead of the front is broken to overcast multilayered cloudiness, with showers and embedded towering cumulus clouds, which is less than 100 miles west of the garden isle as of this writing. This cloudiness has been approaching the island at 15 to 20 mph.

An upper low that had affected the weather across the region over the past couple of days continues to move away toward the northeast. It is now more than 1200 miles northeast of Honolulu. Most of the active weather with the feature has moved east of 140°W and north of 30°N.
