ALA MOANA REGIONAL PARK COMPETES FOR $100,000
AS "AMERICA'S FAVORITE PARK"

(Fri., June 22, 2012)—Mayor Peter B. Carlisle recently accepted a $10,000 grant from Coca-Cola to improve Ala Moana Regional Park and rally the community to vote for the park to win $100,000 and the title of "America's favorite park." Grants are provided to help restore, rebuild, or enhance activity areas in parks where people can play and be active.

"Ala Moana is among our most popular and celebrated parks," said Mayor Carlisle. "It is utilized by paddlers, beach goers, swimmers, tri-athletes, runners, picnickers, and other active residents and visitors. It is also the venue for some of our biggest community events, such as the upcoming Fourth of July celebration. If we can get all of the people that come to the park on that holiday to check in and vote for Ala Moana, we will win this competition and get more money to make this park even better."

Coca-Cola is hosting this contest for the third year and offers the park with the most votes a $100,000 recreation grant from the Coca-Cola Live Positively initiative. Second and third place parks receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, and a fourth place winner drawn at random from the remaining 25 parks wins a $15,000 grant. The national contest is currently underway and continues until Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

If Ala Moana Regional Park receives additional grant money, improvement possibilities include work on sewer lines at the comfort stations, sprinkler upgrades, sand replacement, and general beautification.

There are two ways to generate votes in the contest:

1) Unlimited single votes can be cast at www.Livepositively.com/parks. Search "Ala Moana Regional Park," and vote by clicking away. The direct link to the Ala Moana Regional Park page is: http://m.livepositively.com/park_details.jsp?parkId=4f3c0826e4b036beb9454cff

2) Generate 100 votes at a time by first downloading Foursquare to your mobile device, then visiting LivePositively.com/parks to link it to the website. Once you accept the permissions, you are ready to vote from the park.  Foursquare is a social networking mobile application that allows users to post their location at a venue ("check-in"). If you are near or at Ala Moana Regional Park, "check-ins" at this location are possible every
15 minutes. This is the most efficient way to produce votes.

CARLISLE ANNOUNCES CITY'S CHOICE FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLAN

(Wed., June 20, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today announced that Honolulu Affordable Housing Partners LLC has been selected to complete a leasehold purchase agreement for the City's 12 rental housing complexes.

"I challenged our team to find a buyer who would be committed to making the capital improvements necessary to provide our residents with a better living environment," Carlisle said. "We have much work ahead of us, but we are very pleased to have achieved this milestone and look forward to working with the City Council and our residents as we move forward."

Honolulu Affordable Housing Partners is comprised of Highland Property Development LLC of Auburn California; Mr. Richard Gushman of Honolulu, who has over 40 years of real estate experience in Hawaii and on the mainland; and Mr. Stephen Gelber, a Honolulu real estate and tax attorney who has worked on many affordable housing transactions in Hawaii.

Through its Honolulu Affordable Housing Preservation Initiative, the City released in February 2012 a Request for Proposals seeking a qualified entity to purchase the housing complexes and lease the land under them for 65 years.

The proposal submitted by Honolulu Affordable Housing Partners provides for a substantial payment to the City for the acquisition of the properties, a commitment to undertake substantial capital improvements, and a commitment to preserve affordability within the City's housing portfolio.

The City and Honolulu Affordable Housing Partners will soon be negotiating the details of the Purchase and Sale Agreement and the leases that will be submitted to the City Council for review and approval.

The 12 apartment complexes include 850 units which qualify under the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines for low and moderate income households with incomes of 80 percent or less of the median; 189 "gap group" apartments for families with incomes of 80 to 120 percent of the median; and 218 market rate rental units.

The leases will require continuation of current affordable housing guidelines throughout the term of the leases. The buyer will assume full responsibility for rental housing operations, management, and maintenance.

UPDATES TO GOOGLE'S STREET VIEW FEATURE HELPS TRAVELERS

EXPLORE PARKS AND BEACHES IN HAWAII

(Tues., June 19, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today joined an official from Google to announce new Street View imagery of Hawaii's parks, beaches, and attractions. The enhancement to this popular feature of Google Maps enables people from around the world to plan their vacation. This is accomplished by taking virtual tours of popular destinations in Honolulu and throughout Hawaii, such as the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and other public parks and beaches.

The first Street View imagery of Hawaii launched in November 2009, and the latest updates expand that capability into parks, beaches, the Honolulu Zoo and other destinations here and in other cities. Since some of the most interesting and fun places aren't accessible to the Street View car, Google engineers developed the Street View tricycle. Today's imagery is made available by these three-wheel pedicab "trikes" that can maneuver along paths and trails.

"This is a great way for residents and visitors to become familiar with Honolulu's beautiful parks, zoo, aquarium and other destinations before visiting," Carlisle said during a news conference at Hanauma Bay.

The Street View feature in Google Maps already helps Internet users explore 360-degree street-level imagery from around the world by providing panoramas made available by Street View cars that take photographs as they drive down public streets. Once the photographs have been taken, they go through computer processing to make them ready for use on Google Maps.

The City and County of Honolulu is pleased to announce this development with Google because of the many beautiful locations here and the worldwide interest in Hawaii. The City government has emphasized the use of new technology and innovation to help keep the public informed. Carlisle has encouraged the creation of more online tools to make Honolulu a smarter city, such as smart phone apps that allow citizens to report needed repairs to roads and facilities.

Among the many locations now available through Google Maps are Kapiolani Park, Foster Botanical Garden, Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Ala Moana Regional Park, Central Oahu Regional Park, and more than 150 other parks. The feature also includes many popular resorts, golf courses, Kualoa Ranch and other destinations across the state. This expands upon Google's previous road coverage on six of Hawaii's major islands, including Oahu, Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai.

More information about this and other Street View announcements from Google can be found on the Official Google Blog at: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/search?q=street+view
