Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 04 Dec 2010 23:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0500 UTC December 05 2010.

Water vapor imagery was showing an upper level low far northeast of the state near 33°N 135°W. An upper trough extended from the low to just east of the Big Island to near 17°N 158°W. The southwest end of the trough near the state was moving southeast near 15 miles an hour. The upper low was moving more slowly southeastward.

An upper ridge extended roughly from 18°N 165°W to 30°N 171°W. With this ridge just to our west and the upper trough axis east of the state, the air mass around the islands tended to be on the dry and stable side.

An upper trough just beyond the dateline extended from from 19°N 177°E to 30°N 173°E. This upper trough was producing unstable weather in the way of isolated thunderstorms from 16°N to 29°N between 173°W and 176°E. The trough has been nearly stationary over the past 24 hours.

A weakening surface high pressure area just north-northeast of the state this evening was guiding tightly bunched patches of mostly scattered low clouds into the state. These low clouds were moving west near 25 miles an hour. At 7 pm, most of these low clouds in the area were affecting the windward side of the Big Island and east Maui. To a lesser extent, the low clouds were finding their way onto mainly the east and north sides of the other islands. Few clouds were noted on the downwind side of the state except for a few narrow low cloud plumes that form lee of the mountains.

The upper level west to east winds between the Big Island and the ITCZ around 09°N were carrying strands of broken cirrus clouds eastward mainly from 10°N to 16°N east of 170°W. An insignificant amount of scattered to broken wisps of cirrus were noted immediately southwest and south of the Big Island.

Based on data through 0000 UTC December 05 2010.

Low clouds over the smaller islands have generally thinned since daybreak. At 2 pm, just a few clouds were over Niihau, Kauai and Oahu. Clouds remain over Halawa Valley on Molokai, but have decreased in areal coverage over the last several hours. Just a few clouds are found over Lanai and Kahoolawe at 2 pm. On Maui, clouds remain over the east facing slopes of the west Maui mountains, but have thinned a bit since daybreak. Similarly, clouds have thinned over the east facing slopes of Haleakala, while a few clouds have formed over the northwest facing slopes of Haleakala.

On the Big Island, clouds remain over the east facing slopes of the Kohala mountains, and over the north Hilo, south Hilo and Puna districts. A small batch of clouds is noted upslope of Punaluu and Hawaiian ocean view estates in the Kau district at 2 pm. Low clouds increased over the south Kona and north Kona districts, with mostly cloudy skies overhead at 2 pm.

Water vapor imagery shows the upper level low to the northeast of the islands to be near 33.4°N 136.3°W, about 1560 miles northeast of Honolulu at 2 pm. The associated upper level trough axis has shifted south of the Big Island. The trough axis lies along a rough line from 29°N 129°W to 17°N 154°W.

A low pressure system near the dateline continues to spark thunderstorms between 170°W and the dateline.

GREASE CAUSES SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW IN WAIPAHU

(Sat., Dec. 4, 2010) – The City's Department of Environmental Services responded late Friday night to a sanitary sewer overflow in Waipahu.

The call came in at 11:00 p.m.  An ENV crew arrived at the scene at 11:35 p.m. with the site secured at 12:10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Grease clogged a 10-inch vitrified clay sewer pipe causing the overflow from a manhole at the intersection of Awamoi and Waipahu Street.  An estimated 5,250 gallons of raw wastewater was discharged.  Approximately 4,700 gallons made its way into a nearby storm drain, which leads to Waikele Stream and eventually Pearl Harbor's West Loch.  An ENV Vactor truck was able to recover 300 gallons and about 250 gallons dissipated into the ground.

ENV notified the state Department of Health and the U.S. Navy.  The affected area has been cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.  Signing and water sampling will begin at dawn.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sat, 04 Dec 2010 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC December 04 2010.

The tail end of an old frontal remnant south of the state has dissipated. The low clouds from the decayed frontal band now blended in with all the other low clouds surrounding the Hawaiian islands. Randomly distributed patches and small clusters of scattered to broken low clouds surrounded the state. Each of these low clouds were separated by fairly generous amounts of clear sky. The low clouds near the islands were moving west near 25 miles an hour.

Water vapor imagery showed an upper level trough extending through 30°N 132°W to 26°N 140°W to 23°N 155°W. The west end of the trough was moving southeast near 35 miles an hour while the east segment was moving due east. A 275 miles wide strand of broken to overcast cirrus Sat immediately south of the trough. The cirrus was centered along a line from 20°N 151°W to 23°N 135°W. This large strand of high clouds was moving east at 50 to 60 miles an hour.

A distinct upper level low was near 25°N 172°E. Two other weaker, nearly indiscernible upper lows were near 21°N 177°W and 30°N 180°E. The unstable air mass in this region was generating widely scattered thunderstorms from 17°N to 31°N between 172°W and 178°E. The thunderstorms south of 23°N were nearly stationary. Those north of 23°N were drifting northward.

Two northwest to southeast aligned bands of broken to overcast layered clouds, each containing a handful of small, isolated thunderstorms, were located from 15°N to 30°N between 162°W and 170°W.

Elsewhere, isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms along the ITCZ were mainly forming between 06°N and 10°N from 135°W to 170°W. Most of the storms had weakened during the night. But some of the highest storm tops were still up near 47000 feet.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Fri, 03 Dec 2010 23:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0500 UTC December 04 2010.

The tail end of an old frontal remnant was lingering south of the islands this Friday evening. The northern edge of the decaying cloud band extended from 21°N 140°W to 18°N 155°W. The west end of the band was 80 miles south of the Big Island. The east and west ends of the band were about 100 miles wide with the wider, central part of the band being about 170 miles wide.

The frontal remnant had become detached from the main extending from 20°N 135°W through 30°N 125°W. The front continued north to a low pressure center near 34°N 128°W. The cloud band south of the state was drifting slowly toward the west-southwest.

Water vapor imagery showed a couple of upper lows far west of the state. One was in the vicinity of 21°N 179°W and the other was across the dateline near 28°N 172°E. Widely scattered thunderstorms with tops up to 47000 were forming in the area from 17°N to 30°N between 174°W and 178°E. A few, sparse, isolated thunderstorms were noted closer to the islands from 18°N to 29°N between 165°W and 169°W.

An upper level short-wave trough extended roughly from 26°N 152°W to 26°N 158°W. This short-wave was moving southeast near 30 mph. The tail end of a more significant upper trough northeast of the state extended through 27°N 140°W to 27°N 148°W. This trough was moving south at just over 20 miles an hour.

A swath of mostly broken cirrus clouds was passing just northeast of the state. It was flowing eastward and just missing the islands. The roughly 210 miles wide swath was centered along a line from 23°N 141°W to 22°N 155°W.

Patches and small clusters of scattered to broken low clouds were located east and north of the island chain. Mostly clear skies prevailed within 75 miles southwest of the islands at 7 pm except for a low cloud plume flowing off the southwest part of the Big Island.

Elsewhere, ITCZ thunderstorms to the south were mainly forming between 07°N and 11°N from 163°W to 173°W.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Fri, 03 Dec 2010 18:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0000 UTC December 04 2010.

The remnant of a frontal band has moved south of the main Hawaiian islands. Cloud cover has decreased over most areas around the main Hawaiian islands since this morning, but clouds have increased over the interior and leeward areas of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Low clouds are isolated over Niihau and Lanai. Clouds are scattered over most areas of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui, but there are patchy broken low clouds over the windward slopes. Overcast clouds blanket most of the Big Island but clouds are scattered over the very summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and there are only isolated clouds along the coast and lower slopes from 15 miles northeast of Kailua-Kona to Upolu Point. There are scattered to broken high clouds over the islands, but these clouds are quite thin. Radars show numerous light to moderate showers over the windward slopes of the Big Island and only very isolated light showers elsewhere around the main Hawaiian islands.

Low cloud motions near the Big Island are from the east northeast at 25 to 30 mph, slowing to 20 to 25 mph near Kauai. There are only scattered, stable low clouds immediately upstream of the main Hawaiian islands. Cloud cover increases to scattered to broken about 120 miles upstream of the islands.

The trailing end of an old frontal band lies south of a line from 20°N 140°W to 18.5°N 150°W to 20 miles southwest of the Big Island to 60 miles southwest of Kauai where the band becomes partly obscured by higher clouds. The part of the band east of 155°W is 120 miles wide and contains showery broken to overcast low clouds. The part of the old front west of 155°W is a discontinuous band of showery scattered to broken low clouds. The old frontal band has been moving toward the south southwest at 12 mph. A less-well-organized band of showery low clouds is south of a line from 17°N 140°W to 14°N 155°W to 20°N 167°W.

Water vapor imagery, which shows features mainly above 24000 ft, shows a short-wave trough from 31°N 153°W to 28°N 160°W. This trough has been moving toward the south southeast at 30 mph. A low aloft is centered 1235 miles west of Kauai at 20°N 179°W. The low has been moving toward the north northeast at 20 mph and weakening. There are overcast layered clouds and scattered cumulonimbus clouds north of 20°N west of 174°W. A 500 mile wide area of broken high clouds covers the area from 20°N to 27°N between 140°W and 175°W.

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Fri, 03 Dec 2010 12:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1800 UTC December 03 2010.

Note, there has been a nationwide data disruption, so we are operating with limited data.

The trailing end of a frontal band lies over the main Hawaiian islands. Showery, broken to overcast low clouds cover most areas of the islands from Niihau to Maui with scattered low clouds over some lower leeward areas. Showery overcast low clouds cover the windward side of the Big Island from Upolu Point to South Point these clouds extend upslope into the southeast side of the Humuula Saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Low clouds are isolated over the leeward side of the Big Island. There are thin broken high clouds over Kauai. These high clouds diminish farther south and east. Radars show scattered moderate showers over Kauai and the southeast side of the Big Island and isolated light showers elsewhere over the main Hawaiian islands.

The cloud band over the main Hawaiian islands is south of a line from 21°N 140°W to 19°N 150°W to just offshore of the islands from the Big Island to Oahu to Lihue where the band becomes obscured by higher clouds. The part of the band east of 151°W is 170 miles wide and contains showery overcast low clouds. The band tapers down to 100 miles wide near the Big Island. The part of the band over the main Hawaiian islands is partly broken up and the south edge of the band is discontinuous. There is a 90 mile wide zone of isolated to scattered low clouds just northeast of the frontal band. Low clouds near the main Hawaiian islands are moving from the east at 30 to 35 mph. There are scattered, rather stable appearing, low clouds immediately upstream of the main Hawaiian islands. Farther northeast of the islands is a large area of broken low clouds.

Water vapor imagery, which shows features mainly above 24000 ft, shows a long-wave trough aloft nearly stationary from 30°N 134°W to 12°N 138°W. A short-wave trough from 31°N 150°W to 30°N 160°W has been moving toward the south southeast at 30 mph. Another low aloft is centered at 19°N 179°W. There are overcast layered clouds and scattered cumulonimbus clouds north between 20°N and 30°N between 175°W and 178°E.
