TRAFFIC ADVISORY: LANE CLOSURES (Fri., May 25, 2012) − The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) wants to inform drivers that archaeological survey work continues next week in the urban Honolulu area for the rail transit project. Motorists are advised of lane closures related to the survey work being conducted in the Kalihi, downtown Honolulu, and Kaka'ako areas. Work will require lane closures during non-peak traffic hours, including possible night work in approved areas. For the safety of both the work crews and motorists, the public is advised to proceed with caution through these areas. Drivers should anticipate possible traffic delays or use alternate routes during work hours, and provide a safe distance between themselves and the construction workers and equipment. Work for the week of Sunday, May 27, through Saturday, June 2, will take place at the following locations:
The City is conducting the archaeological survey work along the urban Honolulu section of the Honolulu rail transit route to identify potential archaeological, historical and cultural resources. The archaeological work will aid rail project staff in their design of the elevated rail guideway. Trenching work will take place at various locations along the Honolulu rail route between Middle Street in Kalihi and Ala Moana Center. Contractors Cultural Surveys Hawaii Inc. and Royal Contracting Co. are conducting the fieldwork. The survey work will be completed before rail construction begins in the urban Honolulu area, as specified under the rail project's programmatic agreement relating to cultural and historic resources. MAYOR PRESENTS PARAMEDIC AND LIFESAVER AWARD (Thu., May 24, 2012) − Mayor Peter B. Carlisle presented the Paramedic of the Year award to City employee Lorrin Okumura and the Honolulu Lifesaver Award to Iolani School Health Director Shannon Yonamine, R.N. Lorrin Okumura, safety specialist with the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, was honored as this year's Paramedic of the Year. Okumura developed critical department safety programs and was also involved in developing an infectious disease exposure plan for the City. Shannon Yonamine was recognized for her performance and quick response in saving the life of a colleague who suffered cardiac arrest on May 4, 2012. Jason H. Nunogawa, Palolo pool manager, and Pool Aides Deborah J. Chun and Lana Chun were also selected for Honolulu Lifesaver Awards for saving the life of a resident who suffered cardiac arrest at the pool on June 20, 2011. JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM APPLICATION DEADLINE MAY 29, SPACES STILL AVAILABLE (Tue., May 22, 2012) − The Department of Emergency Services Ocean Safety Division and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association announce that online registration deadline for the summer Junior Lifeguard Program is Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Enrollment is still available at the four program locations. As of today, there are six spaces at Ala Moana Beach Park, 23 spaces at Kalama Beach Park (Kailua), 58 at Ehukai Beach Park (North Shore), and 91 at Makaha Beach Park (West Oahu). Registration must be completed online at http://www.myjuniorguards.com/ . No mail-in registrations will be accepted. The Junior Lifeguard Program familiarizes teenagers, 13 - 17 years old, with ocean awareness and safety. This is a five-day course, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., instructed by Ocean Safety Lifeguard Professionals. It will include beach skills, ocean training, surf rescue techniques, physical conditioning, swimming, CPR, first aid, and other related activities. There is a suggested $45 donation for program participation. The program is open to males and females ages 13 17. Applicants must have strong swimming skills and a desire to learn about ocean safety. (Tue, May 22, 2012) The City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, which annually coordinates the Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, is alerting residents not to be alarmed if they hear jets flying and rifles discharged on Memorial Day. Military jets will conduct a low-altitude fly over at Punchbowl to commemmorate the annual event on May 28, 2012. Preceding the fly over will be a rifle volley at approximately 9:15 a.m., which will last about five minutes. The public is invited to the Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony is presented through the coordination and support of more than 50 government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations and individuals. (Tue., May 22, 2012) Mayor Peter Carlisle, General David Bramlett, General Bramlett will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Chaplain LTC Ken Bellinger, Deputy Command Chaplain, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army, will give the invocation. The service will also include the Royal Hawaiian Band, Sounds of Aloha Choir, a traditional gun salute, and "Missing Man" formation flyover. Law enforcement Explorer Captain Risa Moniz, Boy Scout Andrew Musgrave, and Senior Girl Scout Kayla Seto will assist dignitaries by placing memorial wreaths at the cemetery's Dedicatory Stone. Junior ROTC cadets from The Hickam Base Honor Guard will fire a 21-gun rifle salute while "Taps" is solemnly played. The stirring ceremony will be highlighted by the 199th Fighter Squadron, Hawaii Air National Guard, and 19th Fighter Squadron, U.S. Air Force fighter jets flying the "Missing Man" formation. Parking at the cemetery is limited; therefore, the City will provide special bus service for those attending the ceremony by incorporating the Punchbowl stop on Route 15, Makiki/Pacific Heights, for that day.
