HONOLULU RANKED THIRD BEST U.S. CITY

(Wed., Sept. 21, 2011)—Mayor Peter Carlisle said he is pleased to hear that Honolulu has been ranked by Businessweek.com as the third best city in America for its overall quality of life.

"We all know Honolulu is a fantastic place, and it's great to have that recognized by an organization that has compared our quality of life with that of other great cities," Carlisle said.

Businessweek.com wrote that, "From the prominent slopes of Diamond Head to the white beaches of Waikiki, Honolulu is a beautiful place to live and play. The area has done well through the recession, with extremely low unemployment and a low level of foreclosures." Honolulu's air quality and surfing opportunities were also cited as contributing factors.

Raleigh, North Carolina was named the Best City in America, while Arlington, Virginia was ranked second.

The rankings are available at: http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/which-is-americas-best-city-09202011.html .

CITY BUDGET PRESENTATION WINS NATIONAL AWARD

(Wed., Sept. 21, 2011)—Mayor Peter Carlisle announced that the City and County of Honolulu has received a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

"The City is committed to accuracy and transparency in reporting financial information, and we greatly appreciate this recognition for our efforts," Carlisle said.

The award reflects the City's commitment to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting, according to the association. To receive such an award, a government entity must satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines assess how well a budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.

Earlier this month, the association also awarded the City a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its annual Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 17,400 government financial professionals throughout North America. The GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

HONOLULU TO HOST 2012 MEDAL OF HONOR CONVENTION

(Sat., Sept. 17, 2011)—The City and County of Honolulu and the Honolulu Medal of Honor 2012 host committee are pleased to announce that the Congressional Medal of Honor Society has selected Honolulu to host its 2012 national convention.

"It is an honor for Honolulu to host our country's most-decorated war heroes," said Mayor Peter Carlisle. "We owe them a debt of gratitude and look forward to a successful event next year."

Approximately 85 Medal of Honor recipients plan to gather in Honolulu next year for the annual Medal of Honor Convention, which will be held at the Hale Koa Hotel and other locations from October 2 to 6, 2012.

During the convention, the Medal of Honor recipients will take part in various activities including opportunities for outreach to children, students and veterans to meet and interact with them in and around Honolulu.

Convention co-chairpersons, David J. McIntyre, Jr., President and CEO of TriWest Healthcare Alliance and retired Admiral Tom Fargo, along with the Medal of Honor Society's liaison and Medal of Honor Recipient Major Drew Dix will be in Honolulu on September 19, 2011, for committee meetings regarding the convention.

The Medal of Honor, established by President Abraham Lincoln in December 1861, is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy that can be earned by a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. The recipients of the Medal of Honor must distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty, according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation's guidelines.

Special thanks to TriWest Healthcare Alliance for committing to be the major sponsor for the 2012 Congressional Medal of Honor Convention. For more information on next year's convention, please contact Paul Andes of the 2012 Honolulu Medal of Honor host committee at (808) 371-4500.
