Traffic Advisory: Lane closures planned along Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) wants to inform drivers of lane closures along Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City beginning Monday, February 2 as part of rail construction.

The 24-hour lane closures, which start Monday evening, February 2 and run until mid-2015, are needed to allow crews to safely conduct shaft and column work along the highway median for the planned rail guideway:

·       One eastbound left-turn lane from Kamehameha Highway onto Acacia Road fronting Pearl Highlands Center will be closed. For safety reasons, U-turns will be restricted in the eastbound direction of Kamehameha Highway at the Acacia Road intersection during the lane closure.

·       One westbound left-turn lane and the inside westbound lane of Kamehameha Highway near the Acacia Road intersection will also be closed 24 hours a day as part of the shaft and column work.

Motorists who routinely use this stretch of Kamehameha Highway should provide themselves extra time during their commute.

City to hold second Airport Area TOD community meeting

The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) will hold the second community workshop for the public and businesses to create the Airport Area Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Plan.

The workshop is set for Monday, Feb. 2, at the Aliamanu Middle School Cafeteria, 3271 Salt Lake Blvd., from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  Light refreshments will be provided.

The Airport Area TOD Plan will focus on the areas around the rail stations planned at Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Honolulu International Airport, and Lagoon Drive.  The DPP will be seeking input on the preservation of the area's industrial core, and if residential development is appropriate in the station areas.

Other concepts that will be discussed include:

·       Safe pedestrian crossings of Nimitz Highway and other major roadways

·       Bus and bicycle connections to rail stations

·       Improvements to Keehi Lagoon Park

The Airport Area TOD Plan is one of eight neighborhood plans being developed by the DPP for 19 stations along the city's 20-mile rail transit line that will lay out the foundation for improvements in the area.

Traffic Advisory: Section of Farrington Highway in Ewa to reopen Thursday

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation wants to inform drivers that Farrington Highway between Kualakai Parkway (North-South Road) and Old Fort Weaver Road Loop will partially reopen starting Thursday, January 29.

The eastbound direction of Farrington Highway will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday and remain open each weekday from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. to accommodate daytime commuters. The westbound direction will remain closed because of ongoing guideway construction.

The section of highway will then be closed weeknights in both directions from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow construction crews to safely conduct rail guideway work along the narrow two-lane stretch of road. The nightly closures are expected to last approximately two months, with the highway to be completely open to drivers once the guideway work is complete.

Motorists who routinely use Farrington Highway should provide themselves extra time for their commute. During the nightly closure, drivers travelling between East Kapolei and the Ewa/Waipahu region will still be able to access either side by using either the H-1 Freeway on the north end of Kualakai Parkway, or Kapolei Parkway/Geiger Road on the south end (see attached locator map).
