KALIHI VALLEY PEOPLE'S OPEN MARKET CELEBRATES HEALTHY CHOICES

(Sat., August 25, 2012)---Kalihi Valley shoppers were rewarded for making healthy food choices today at the Kalihi Valley People's Open Market (POM) celebration, hosted by the City Department of Parks and Recreation, Kalihi Valley non-profits, including Kokua Kalihi Valley, the State Department of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The event highlighted the availability and affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables to customers of the Kalihi Valley POM, 1911 Kamehameha IV Road. In addition to its low prices for locally grown products, the Kalihi Valley market offered a "double your dollars" bonus, up to a maximum $15 purchase, to anyone using their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefits Transfer (SNAP-EBT) cards.

SNAP-EBT is part of a national food stamp program that provides consumers with discounted products through participating retailers, including grocery stores and farmer's markets. The goal of SNAP and the City's POM is to improve the likelihood that persons eligible for SNAP will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles.  SNAP plays a vital role in helping to improve nutrition in the nation, particularly among low-income households.

The City expects to offer this two-for-one promotional discount at the Kalihi Valley location through the end of this year, and possibly longer, thanks to the generosity of Kokua Kalihi Valley and other non-profits. "We'd like to encourage healthy food choices and let people know that these products are accessible and affordable at the City's Open Market locations," said Ned Yonamine, supervisor of the City's 24 POM locations.

Anyone intersted in applying for SNAP-EBT benefits can go to the USDA website: http://www.snap-step1.usda.gov/fns for more information.

Today's event included food demonstrations, samples, and giveaways, SNAP-EBT card signups, and gardening workshops. Future events will include celebrity cookoffs, using products from the People's Open Market.

CARLISLE INVITES ALL TO KAILUA 'CYCLOVIA' EVENT

(Fri., Aug. 24, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle invites everyone to enjoy Hele On Kailua, a free public "Cyclovia" event in which part of Hekili Street will be reserved exclusively for pedestrians, runners, skaters and bicyclists this Sunday, August 26, 2012.

"The City and County of Honolulu is proud to support this fun, car-free event," Carlisle said. "This is a great way to encourage bicycling and other healthy physical activities."

"Ciclovias" – Spanish for "bike paths" – are major weekly events in Colombia and other nations, where streets are cleared for pedestrians and bicyclists. The word has been modified as "Cyclovias" by many English-speakers, and such events have been held in many American cities. Sunday's event will be Hawaii's first Cyclovia.

The fun starts at 10 a.m. on Hekili Street at Pali Lanes with a five kilometer run. Other activities, beginning at 11 a.m., include escorted bike rides to Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Enchanted Lake Community Park (using City bike lanes), games for children, bike maintenance demonstrations, exercise activities, food, entertainment, prize drawings and much more.

For more information, and to register for the run, go to http://www.cycloviahawaii.org/ or follow on Facebook at Cyclovia-Hawaii.

CITY ANNOUNCES THE 2012 MAYOR'S CUP GOLF TOURNAMENT

(Fri., August 24, 2012) − After a successful, sold-out revival of the Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament last year, the City and County of Honolulu has partnered once again with the Hawaii State Golf Association (HSGA) to host the 2012 Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament on September 8 - 9, at the Ala Wai Golf Course.  The deadline to register is Wednesday, August 29, 2012, and is limited to the first 200 golfers. Visit http://www.hawaiistategolf.org/ to register.

The tournament is open to amateur golfers who are HSGA members with an active GHIN (Golf Handicap Index Number) handicap. There are five flights and the B- Flight has been filled. The tournament fee is $140 per golfer, which includes green and cart fees for both rounds, lunch for both days and the Monday awards banquet.

"We are pleased to offer Hawaii's amateur golfers the opportunity to competitively showcase their skills at one of the most heavily played golf courses in the world," said Randy Leong, deputy director of the Department of Enterprise Services. "We are extremely grateful that the presenting sponsors Kyo-ya and Starwood Hotels have once again stepped up to offer attractive prizes." Other event sponsors include RM Towill, Aloha Pacific Federal Union, Ward Centers, HT7T Truck Center, B Hayman, Pro Am Golf and Roger Dunn Golf.

Competing in the Mayor's Cup puts golfers on track for major tournaments. Amateur golfers who play in the Championship flight vie for a chance to accrue points for the John A. Burns Challenge Cup, which leads to an opportunity to play in the Sony Open. Last year's winner was former Moanalua High School golfer Seungjae Maeng who is currently on the University of the Pacific golf team.
