CARLISLE SIGNS NEW SISTER-CITY PACT WITH FENGXIAN DISTRICT, CHINA

(Thurs., Aug. 23, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today joined Mayor Zhuang Shaoqin of Fengxian District, Shanghai, China to sign a new agreement establishing sister-city ties.

"Fengxian District is a vibrant, growing community that we're very proud to call our sister," Carlisle said. "This agreement will strengthen our ties and promote friendship between our citizens."

Located along the coast in South Shanghai, Fengxian District has a population of more than one million and a growing economy based on sea resources and agriculture, manufacturing, bio-medical science, new energy and tourism. Fengxian District's beaches, resorts and natural beauty make it a popular visitor destination.

Honolulu now has 29 sister-cities, including four others in China: Haikou, Zhongshan, Qinhuangdao and Chengdu.

The City Council approved the new sister-city relationship with Fengxian District on July 11, 2012.

Today's signing ceremony in the Honolulu Hale courtyard featured performances by the Royal Hawaiian Band Glee Club and a gift exchange between the cities.
