CARLISLE INVITES ALL TO KAILUA 'CYCLOVIA' EVENT

(Fri., Aug. 24, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle invites everyone to enjoy Hele On Kailua, a free public "Cyclovia" event in which part of Hekili Street will be reserved exclusively for pedestrians, runners, skaters and bicyclists this Sunday, August 26, 2012.

"The City and County of Honolulu is proud to support this fun, car-free event," Carlisle said. "This is a great way to encourage bicycling and other healthy physical activities."

"Ciclovias" – Spanish for "bike paths" – are major weekly events in Colombia and other nations, where streets are cleared for pedestrians and bicyclists. The word has been modified as "Cyclovias" by many English-speakers, and such events have been held in many American cities. Sunday's event will be Hawaii's first Cyclovia.

The fun starts at 10 a.m. on Hekili Street at Pali Lanes with a five kilometer run. Other activities, beginning at 11 a.m., include escorted bike rides to Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Enchanted Lake Community Park (using City bike lanes), games for children, bike maintenance demonstrations, exercise activities, food, entertainment, prize drawings and much more.

For more information, and to register for the run, go to http://www.cycloviahawaii.org/ or follow on Facebook at Cyclovia-Hawaii.
