ALA MOANA REGIONAL PARK TREE REMOVAL RESCHEDULED

(Thurs., March 8, 2012)—The Earpod tree removal at Ala Moana Regional Park, originally planned for today, has been rescheduled to Monday, March 12, 2012, weather permitting.  The change is due to excessive ponding caused by the recent heavy rain, which has rendered the area inaccessible to workers.

The removal will be performed by a Department of Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry Division contractor.  Extraction of the tree is necessary for public safety, as the tree has several structural defects.  Replacement of the tree will be included in a larger planting project for the park in the near future.

HEAVY RAINS CAUSE TWO SEWER OVERFLOWS IN EAST HONOLULU

(Tue., March 6, 2012) – Heavy rains pounded the east side of Honolulu today as the Department of Environmental Services responded to two sanitary sewer overflows.

The first call came in at 8:40 a.m. with an ENV crew dispatched at 8:46 a.m. and the site secured at 1:40 p.m.  Wet weather caused an overflow at 1542 Pukele Avenue in Palolo releasing an estimated mixture of storm water and raw wastewater of at least 10,000 gallons into Palolo Stream, eventually leading to the Ala Wai Canal.

A second call came in at 11:08 a.m. with a crew dispatched at 11:16 a.m., securing the site at 2:30 p.m.  However, heavy rains surcharged the site again at 3:45 p.m. as crews still work to secure the site.  Wet weather produced a sewer overflow at 5307 Kalanianaole Highway spilling a combination of storm water and raw wastewater of more than 30,000 gallons into Wailupe Stream, which empties into Mauanlua Bay.

ENV notified the state Department of Health.  Signs are posted and water sampling will be conducted once storm event concludes.  Oahu is still under a brown water advisory since yesterday.

SEVERE WEATHER CLOSES OAHU ROADS

Overnight severe weather has caused two road closures on Oahu:

Earlier today the Department of Transportation closed Kalanianaole in both directions between Lunalilo Home Road and Kealahou Street near Koko Head Crater due to rocks and debris on the roadway. Traffic in both directions is being detoured around the affected area via Lunalilo Home Road, Hawaii Kai Drive and Kealahou Street.

The City has closed Diamond Head Rd. in both directions at Makalei Place due to mud, rocks and debris on the road.

Crews are attempting to clear the debris however both closures will remain in effect for an undetermined amount of time.

The National Weather Service has extended the Oahu Flash Flood Warning until 5:00 PM.

A band of heavy showers falling at 1 to 3-inches per hour will move over southeast through 4:00 PM. These heavy showers can quickly trigger flash flooding especially over East Honolulu and Waimanalo where soils are saturated.

Until this severe weather system leaves our area everyone should continue to monitor TV and radio for important information updates.

The Department of Emergency Management also reminds residents to sign-up for Nixle at www.nixle.com/dem to receive emergency and community messages directly from the department via email and cell phone text messaging.

If you have a flood related emergency call 9-1-1 immediately.

CITY ONLINE CAMPING PERMIT SYSTEM SET TO BEGIN

(Mon., Mar. 5, 2012)—The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will implement its online camping permit reservation system on Friday, March 9, 2012. Users can apply online for only family campsites, which allow up to 10 people, in the City's 17 parks that provide camping. Camping permits are issued two weeks in advance and camping permits for family campsites will be available online every Friday at 5:00 in the afternoon. Camping for larger groups will continue to be managed by the parks that have group campsites.

Due to the availability of the online system, camping permits will no longer be issued through Satellite City Halls effective March 9, 2012. Camping permits will continue to be issued in person at the DPR's Permits Section, located on the first floor of the Fasi Municipal Building, 650 S. King Street

"The online system offers flexibility, increases efficiency and reduces the need to stand in line for camping permits." DPR Director Gary Cabato said. "We continue to look at ways to further improve access and efficiency."

Online users will need to establish an account. Therefore, the system will open on Tuesday, March 6, to accommodate the public and allow users to establish accounts. To further assist the public with the new system, there will be an earlier than usual release time of 2:00 p.m. for permit application and issuance on March 9 and 16. However, starting Friday, March 23, the 5:00 p.m. time will apply for all individual camping permit reservations. The following schedule outlines the first weeks of operation:

WET WEATHER OVERFLOW AT KANEOHE PRE-TREATMENT FACILITY

(Mon., March 5, 2012) – As a result of severe weather conditions that occurred over the past 24 hours on the Windward side of Oahu, the City's Department of Environmental Services responded early this morning to a sanitary sewer overflow at its Kaneohe Wastewater Pre-Treatment Facility.

ENV estimates the spill began at approximately 5:30 a.m. and secured the site at 8:20 a.m.  The wet weather flows surcharged two adjacent manholes located inside the facility and sent an estimated 51,000 gallons of combined storm water and raw wastewater into Kawa Stream.

The state Department of Health was notified, which also issued a Brown Water Advisory for the entire island of Oahu.  ENV is posting signs along the shoreline and Kaneohe Beach Park, while water sampling will take place once the storm event ends.
