Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Tue, 11 Jan 2011 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC January 11 2011.

Dry and stable air is spreading over Kauai and Oahu from the north and northwest this morning, while a moist and unstable air mass persists over the Big Island, and portions of Maui county. While layered clouds and embedded showers lie over the Big Island and adjacent waters, scattered stable low clouds are over Kauai and adjacent waters, with clear skies over Oahu. Low clouds near Kauai are moving toward the south near 10 mph, while low clouds near Oahu are non-existent, with layered cloudiness over the Big Island and Maui obscuring a satellite view of low cloud motions.

The sharp gradient in cloud type and coverage from northwest to southeast across the island chain is due to a cold front which is draped across the central portion of the island chain, currently analyzed over Maui. This front is estimated to extend along a line from 30°N 151°W to 23°N 153°W to near 17°N 163°W, with the parent low centered near 36°N 158°W. Water vapor imagery shows that a closed low aloft is co-located with the surface low, about 950 miles north of Oahu. The deep-layered low is moving slowly east, with a trough aloft that extends southward over the islands. This trough aloft is supporting deep convection within the moist air mass east of the surface front, with scattered to numerous thunderstorms, with cloud top temperatures of -70 degrees celsius indicating cloud tops as high as 45 thousand feet. These thunderstorms are within 200 miles either side of a northeast to southwest line that extends from near 28°N 145°W to 16°N 158°W.
