Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Mon, 10 Jan 2011 23:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0500 UTC January 11 2011.

A cold front is sweeping down the island chain this evening, with layered clouds, and coldest cloud tops moving across the islands of Maui and Hawaii counties. While an area of broken to overcast high clouds is moving across Kauai and adjacent waters this evening, the low levels over Kauai have dried out in the wake of the front. Stable low clouds near Kauai are moving southeast near 30 to 35 mph, while low cloud motions elsewhere across the state are generally toward the east, at varying speeds, due to the proximity of the front. While the active weather is over the eastern end of the island chain, within the moist and unstable air mass east of the front, the actual frontal boundary appears to be marked by a narrow northeast to southwest band of low clouds currently over the Kauai channel.

Water vapor imagery reveals a short wave trough aloft moving across the state in conjunction with the surface front, emanating from a closed low aloft centered about 875 miles north of Oahu near 34°N 160°W. The high clouds moving over the western portion of the island chain are associated with a jet Max aloft swinging through the base of the long wave trough that is established near the islands.
