Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 09 Jan 2011 23:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 0430 UTC January 10 2011.

A large swath of broken to overcast high clouds moving from the northwest is overspreading the aloha state this early evening. As of bulletin time, conditions have become overcast in Kauai and Oahu, with the cirrus cloudiness becoming broken over Maui county.

Skies over the islands and adjacent coastal waters are predominantly clear to partly cloudy at the lower levels. The only places that appear to have low ceilings are the south- and west-facing slopes of Haleakala in east Maui, and lower elevations in the Puna and Hilo districts on the Big Island. Low cloud motion is from the west- southwest to southwest at 10 to 15 mph across the island chain.

An upper low that had been influencing the weather over the past couple of days is now more than 1000 miles northeast of Honolulu and is moving away toward the northeast. Lingering showers and isolated thunderstorms with this feature are located from 17°N to 35°N east of 148°W.

An approaching front is now about 480 miles northwest of Kauai and has been heading east and southeast at 20 to 30 mph. Ahead of the boundary is a large area of broken to overcast multilayered clouds with showers and embedded thunderstorms. Much of this cloudiness is less than 300 miles west-northwest of Kauai as of this writing, and is pushing east at 15 to 20 mph. The high clouds currently sweeping over the islands are associated with this system now to the west and northwest.
