Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 26 Jan 2011 18:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0000 UTC January 27 2011.

A slowly dissipating front north of the islands started to retreat back toward the north near midday. The front extended southwest through through 30°N 145°W to 26°N 150°W to 23.5°N 160°W early this afternoon. That part of the front along 30°N continued eastward at 15 to 20 miles an hour while south of 26°N, the front had become nearly stationary. And the west end of the front from 155°W to 160°W, north of Kauai, was creeping slowly northward. The narrow frontal cloud band was about 80 miles north of Kauai at 2 pm.

The front from 30°N southward continued to weaken and was becoming more ragged in appearance. The front was void of thunderstorms except for some possibly forming well north of area beyond 37°N latitude. The broken to overcast low clouds occupying the front south of 30°N were showing more and more breaks within them.

Near the islands, skies were mostly sunny with only a few isolated patches of scattered low clouds over the coastal waters. Over land, broken to overcast low clouds were clustered over the Kau and Kona district slopes. Patchy scattered to broken low clouds hovered over the windward slopes of the Big Island and the slopes of Haleakala crater on Maui. Smaller amounts of low clouds were seen over interior Kauai and over the Koolau range on Oahu. Clouds were on the decrease from Maui to Kauai where mostly sunny skies prevailed. The low clouds near the islands were moving west near 12 miles an hour.
