Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 26 Jan 2011 06:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 1130 UTC January 26 2011.

Low cloud ceilings are prevalent over coastal and lower upslope sections of the Hilo, Puna, Kau, and south Kona districts on the Big Island. Broken low clouds also appear to be occasionally affecting lower upslope areas of north Kona and south Kohala. Skies are otherwise virtually clear around the aloha state this early morning. Low cloud movement across the island chain is from the north to northeast at 10 to 15 mph.

Scattered to broken low clouds associated with a weakening front are 50 miles northwest of Kauai as of bulletin time and are heading south and south-southwest near 15 mph. Some of the cloudiness has been dissipating along the leading edge of the boundary over the past few hours. Most of the low cloudiness with the front is currently northwest and north of a line from 30°N 149°W to 26°N 153°W to 22.5°N 160°W to 20°N 170°W to 18.5°N 180°. The clouds that make up the boundary vary in width along the front between 100 and 150 miles. Elsewhere conditions are predominantly clear to scattered in the adjacent coastal waters, though low clouds collapsing off the Big Island are producing ceilings immediately east clockwise through southwest of the isle.

Another front is moving rapidly east and has now crossed into the central north Pacific south of 30°N. It is still more than 1000 miles northwest of Kauai. As of this writing, the system is west of Midway atoll but has begun influencing the weather there, with overcast low clouds and winds from the south to southwest near 20 mph and gusts to near 30 mph.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms have been igniting far east-southeast of the Big Island. Most of the convection has recently been occurring from 10°N to 16°N between 135°W and 147°W. The active weather is being generated by a combination of a surface trough and an upper trough, both nearly stationary.
