Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 23 Jan 2011 18:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 2330 UTC January 23 2011.

Sunny to partly cloudy skies predominate over the island chain this early afternoon. Low ceilings, however, have recently been occurring in windward and mauka areas of Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai. Broken to overcast low clouds have also been affecting lower upslope sections of Kau and Kona on the Big Island. Low cloud movement is from the east to east-northeast near 20 mph across the aloha state.

Small areas of broken low clouds are currently just upwind from Kauai and Oahu, and to a lesser extent the Big Island. Farther downwind, old plume clouds are generating low ceilings south of 20°N west of 157.5°W, or more than 100 miles west of the Big Island. Conditions are clear to scattered elsewhere in the adjacent coastal waters.

A weak upper low is around 625 miles east of Hilo and has been pushing south-southwest near 10 mph over the past six hours. The feature is enhancing showers and towering cumulus clouds from 15.5°N to 19°N between 140°W and 147.5°W. Also, the upper trough associated with the low, in combination with the intertropical convergence zone, is igniting showers and isolated thunderstorms in the area bounded by 16°N 140°W to 11°N 131°W to 05°N 156°W to 08°N 156°W to 16°N 140°W.

A dissipating front is 375 miles north-northwest of Kauai and has been drifting toward the north since this morning. Remnant low clouds with the system are northwest of a line from 30°N 156°W to 26°N 164°W.
