Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 23 Jan 2011 12:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 1730 UTC January 23 2011.

Skies are clear to partly cloudy over most of the aloha state this morning. Low ceilings are only occasionally occurring in windward and mauka sections on the individual isles, especially over the Hilo and Puna districts on the Big Island as of bulletin time. Low cloud motion is from the east to slightly north of east at 15 to 20 mph across the island chain.

Broken low clouds exist immediately south clockwise through west of the Big Island, and a diffuse line of scattered to broken low cloudiness is upwind of the state and is heading toward the west and west-southwest on the prevailing trade flow. Conditions elsewhere in the adjacent coastal waters are clear to scattered.

A weak upper low is approximately 725 miles east of Hilo and appears to be pushing slowly toward the south or southwest. The system is currently enhancing showers and towering cumulus cloudiness in the area from 15°N to 18°N between 140°W and 147°W. More intense showers and isolated thunderstorms are igniting farther south along the intertropical convergence zone. This activity is firing within 200 miles either side of a line from 13°N 134°W to 09°N 145°W to 07°N 155°W.

A front is dissipating about 350 miles north-northwest of Kauai. Remnant cloudiness with the boundary is northwest of a line from 30°N 156.5°W to 27°N 160°W to 24°N 168°W.
