SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW IN LANAKILA

(Monday, Jan. 24, 2011) – The City's Department of Environmental Services responded late this afternoon to a sanitary sewer overflow in Lanakila.

An odor complaint came in at 3:35 p.m. An ENV crew found the source of the odor and secured the site at 7:00 p.m.

Grease clogged a 6-inch reinforced concrete pipe at 1622 Ahiahi Place causing 10,250 gallons of untreated wastewater into a storm drain that exits into Kapalama Canal and eventually Honolulu Harbor.

ENV cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the area and notified the state Department of Health.  Signing will begin at first light. DOH waived water sampling because Honolulu Harbor is not a recreational area and already has a high bacteria level, which would skew data.
