Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Tue, 25 Jan 2011 06:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 1130 UTC January 25 2011.

As was the case last evening, most areas around the island chain are clear to partly cloudy. The low ceilings, some with embedded showers, that are occurring exist mainly in windward and mauka sections on the individual isles. As of bulletin time, this is especially so in Kauai and over the Hilo and Puna districts on the Big Island. Broken low clouds have also been affecting leeward parts of the island of Hawaii from time to time. Low cloud motion is from the east between 10 and 15 mph across the aloha state this early morning.

Conditions are clear to scattered in the adjacent coastal waters for the most part. However, small patches of broken low cloudiness, some with embedded showers, are evident north of the isles and south of the Big Island. Most of these clouds are heading west on the prevailing trade flow.

A front approximately 540 miles north-northwest of Kauai, and moving east at 25 to 30 mph along 30°N, has been merging with an old frontal boundary to its east. The leading edge of broken to overcast low clouds with the old front is 400 miles north-northwest of Kauai and has begun to move east at 15 to 20 mph in response to the approaching system. Only limited deep convection is occurring south of 30°N, from 28°N to 30°N between 160°W and 163°W, though more explosive activity is igniting farther to the northeast along the frontal boundary east of 160°W.

A northeast-to-southwest oriented upper trough is nearly stationary far southeast of the Big Island. Multilayered clouds, showers, and isolated thunderstorms associated with the feature are southeast of a line from 21°N 140°W to 13°N 154°W. A weak surface trough also appears to be moving west slowly in the area from 10°N to 14°N between 152°W and 155°W.
