Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 02 Feb 2011 18:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0000 UTC February 03 2011.

Two synoptic-scale cloud features are prominent in the subtropical Pacific. A low pressure centered near 40°N 161°W is producing a cold front far north of Hawaii, and an upper level low is creating a layered cloud band far west of the state.

The cold front is bringing a cloud band centered from 30°N 164°W to 25°N and the dateline. The cloud band continues moving east at 20 mph. The band is made up of layered overcast up to 35 thousand feet near as far west as 170°W and then weakens between 170°W and the dateline to overcast low and mid clouds.

The upper low to the east is producing a band of layered clouds from 10°N to 25°N between 141°W to 147°W. Scattered thunderstorms are forming between 18°N and 23°N within the layered clouds. Clouds tops are reaching as high as 45 thousand feet.

Scattered low clouds are moving west at 15 to 20 mph between 10°N and 20°N from 150°W to the dateline. North of 20°N, low clouds ahead of the cold front are moving north at 15 mph from 150°W to 170°W, and northeast from 170°W to the dateline.

Over the islands, cloudiness has increased since this morning with mostly cloudy skies forming over the higher terrain of Kauai Oahu and Maui county up to 8 thousand feet. The coastal areas remain mostly clear. On the Big Island, mostly cloudy skies ring the volcanoes up to 8 thousand feet while the summits have clear skies. Big island coasts have partly cloudy skies. Scattered low clouds over the coastal waters are moving west at 10 to 20 mph over the eastern half of the state, and then veer toward the northwest over the western half of the state.
