Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Tue, 01 Feb 2011 12:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1800 UTC February 01 2011.

Mostly sunny skies prevail over the main Hawaiian islands this morning, except for stable scattered to broken stratocumulus /sc/ over select windward areas, and adjacent waters. The exception is windward Big Island, where broken showery cumulus /cu/ linger along the Hamakua slopes, after isolated towering cu erupted along the slopes overnight.

On Kauai, skies are sunny, with just a few wisps of thin cirrus and isolated sc over the windward coast and near shore waters. Oahu is sunny, aside from a narrow band of stable sc over the windward coast, with scattered to broken sc over the near shore windward waters. A similar scene is noted over the islands of Maui county, where sunny skies prevail, except for scattered to broken sc over the eastern tip of Molokai, and over the windward facing slopes of Maui. Lanai and Kahoolawe are sunny. Leeward Big Island is sunny, as are skies over the Kau district, but the northeast facing lower slopes are under scattered to broken showery cu.

Water vapor imagery shows an expansive anticyclone aloft centered far to the west-southwest of the islands near 15°N 160°E, and has a ridge that extends east-northeastward along a line from 14°N 180 to 20°N 168°W to 30°N 155°W. A trough aloft is located just east of the islands, north-south oriented roughly along 150°W, from 8°N to 28°N. The anticyclone is nearly stationary and the trough is progressing slowly toward the east, with the result being a strong northerly flow aloft over the islands.

While skies over near shore leeward waters are mostly clear, small sc are scattered to broken in coverage, with little to no precipitation detected by radar, except for small light showers over windward Maui, and moderate showers persisting over windward big island's Hamakua district. Low cloud motions are toward the west at speeds between 15 to 20 mph.
