Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Mon, 17 Jan 2011 23:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 0430 UTC January 18 2011.

Low cloud ceilings are minimal across the aloha state and adjacent coastal waters this early evening. There are broken conditions over southeast Oahu, northern coastal and upslope sections of east Maui, and over the mountain slopes on the Big Island as of bulletin time. However, much of this cloudiness is dissipating as the evening progresses. Also, high clouds, associated with a strong north-to-south oriented jet stream over the area, are occasionally forming over Oahu and Maui county. Low level flow appears to be light and variable over the island chain.

An upper low is around 385 miles north-northeast of Honolulu and has been heading southeast near 15 mph over the past six hours. A trough with the low extends from the low center to 23°N 152°W to 17°N 154°W to 09°N 160°W. The trough is pushing slowly east. The system is igniting showers and thunderstorms from 22°N to 29°N between 150°W and 153°W, from 25°N to 28°N between 155°W and 158°W, and in the area bounded by 10°N 153°W to 07°N 151°W to 06°N 164°W to 10°N 157°W to 10°N 153°W.

A surface trough is about 800 miles east-southeast of the Big Island and has been moving northwest slowly. Showers and thunderstorms associated with this feature are currently firing from 12°N to 17°N between 141°W and 145°W.

A front is far west and northwest of Hawaii in the vicinity of Midway atoll, and has been heading east at 25 to 30 mph. The most recent surface observation from the Midway site indicates overcast low clouds, visibility below a mile in rain and fog, and winds from the west at 23 mph gusting to 37 mph. High clouds far ahead of the surface boundary have made it as far east as 160°W, just west of Kauai.
