Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Mon, 17 Jan 2011 06:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 1130 UTC January 17 2011.

Showers have diminished across the aloha state this early morning, compared to last evening.

Areas of rain ahead of a cold front have recently been affecting the north and northwest parts of the Big Island, though earlier heavy precipitation bands that had pushed over Molokai and Maui have dissipated or moved off to the east. The front itself appears to be over Molokai as of bulletin time, and is generating only a limited number of showers. Skies have cleared over Niihau and Kauai and their adjacent waters, with mainly high clouds remaining over Oahu and adjacent waters. Varying amounts of middle and high clouds exist over Maui county and the Big Island, but low cloudiness is waning as the cold front weakens over the isles. Low cloud motion is from the northwest at 20 to 25 mph just west and northwest of Kauai, and becomes west to northwest near 15 mph moving down the chain to the Big Island.

Most of the multilayered clouds with the front are currently located within 100 miles either side of a line from 30°N 154°W to 24°N 155°W to 17°N 160°W. The band as a whole has been heading east to southeast at 15 to 20 mph over the past seven hours. Elsewhere, ahead of the front, showers and isolated thunderstorms have been developing northeast clockwise through south of the Big Island. The thunderstorms have been forming more than 100 miles from the isle. On the other hand, conditions have become clear to partly cloudy south clockwise through north of Kauai.

Aloft, the axis of a sharp north-to-south oriented trough associated with the surface front is along a line from 30°N 158°W to just over Kauai to 20°N 160°W as of this writing. The feature has been sweeping east near 20 mph over the past several hours.
