Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Tue, 18 Jan 2011 06:00:00 -0600

Based on data through 1130 UTC January 18 2011.

A strong jet flowing from the north and northwest exists high in the atmosphere and is generating a swath of broken to overcast high clouds over waters just north of the state, and over the isles from Kauai to Maui. A branch of the jet has begun rotating in a counterclockwise direction as it begins to track around an upper low about 350 miles northeast of Honolulu. The low appears to have become nearly stationary. The axis of a trough stretches from the low center to 22°N 151°W to 16°N 152°W to 08°N 159°W, and has become nearly stationary as well. Convection associated with the system is located from 22°N to 28°N between 148°W and 152, from 23°N to 27°N between 153°W and 157°W, and from 05.5°N to 09°N between 151°W and 157°W.

Over the isles and coastal waters, skies are predominantly clear below the high cloudiness this early morning. However, low cloud ceilings are occurring over coastal and lower upslope sections of the Big Island, from north Kona clockwise around the isle to south Hilo and Puna. Broken low cloudiness is also evident north and northeast of the island of Hawaii. Low level flow remains light and variable across the island chain, as was the case last evening.

A surface trough is roughly 750 miles east-southeast of Big Island and has been heading west to northwest at less than 10 mph over the past seven hours. The feature is triggering showers and isolated thunderstorms within 90 miles either side of a line from 19°N 144°W to 13°N 143°W.

A front is 800 miles northwest of Kauai and has been heading east at 20 to 25 mph over the past seven hours. Most of the broken to overcast low clouds with the boundary are currently northwest of a line from 30°N 167°W to 26°N 174°W to 23°N 180°. The front has moved east of Midway, where the latest surface observation shows clear skies, four miles visibility with, possibly, sea spray, and winds from the west at 20 mph gusting to 30 mph.
