Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 16 Jan 2011 18:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0000 UTC January 17 2011.

Regional satellite imagery shows a 400 mile wide band of overcast layered clouds, with embedded heavy showers and thunderstorms, that extends northwestward from Kauai and adjacent waters. This band is northeast-southwest oriented, and cloud tops have been cooling along the leading edge of the line, which includes that portion near Kauai. This line of cooling cloud tops lies 60 miles either side of a line from 27°N 156°W to 23°N 159°W to over Kauai to near 20°N 162°W, and is moving east at 10 to 15 mph.

While heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are over Kauai and adjacent waters this afternoon, relatively benign weather exists over the other islands, aside from what appears to be isolated pockets of heavy showers developing along the big island's leeward slopes. On Oahu, skies are partly sunny, with broken stratocumulus and cumulus over the interior of the island, and broken high clouds spreading over the entire island from the west. Broken cu and sc line the lower slopes on Maui, but coastal areas and upper elevations are mostly sunny. While the southeast side of the Big Island is mostly sunny with few cu, the west side of the island is under broken to overcast sc and cu, with what appear to be isolated towering cu over the Kona slopes.
