Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 16 Jan 2011 12:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1800 UTC January 16 2011.

Regional satellite imagery shows a 500 mile wide band of overcast layered clouds just northwest of the islands, associated with a surface front and a sharpening trough aloft.

Water vapor imagery show a sharpening trough aloft to the northwest of the islands, extending southeast from a progressive low aloft located north of 30°N, near 33°N 167°W. The trough axis lies along a line through 30°N 166°W to 25°N 170°W, with the trough having moved toward the east at 55 mph over the past 6 hours. The area of layered clouds northwest of the islands is being supported by the diffluent flow aloft to the east of the trough axis, with the axis of the surface front indiscernible from satellite imagery alone.

Despite the presence of the front just northwest of the islands, the cloud-level flow over most island areas is from the east, with scattered to broken low clouds moving toward the west near 15 mph. This easterly low-level flow slows near Kauai, where heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are present, mainly over waters west of Kauai. Skies over Kauai are cloudy nonetheless, with the prevailing clouds being high clouds spreading eastward from the deep convection to the west. Windward Oahu is mostly cloudy with broken to overcast stable stratocumulus /sc/ mixed in with showery cumulus /cu/ elements, while leeward Oahu is mostly sunny with some thin high clouds spreading over the island from the west. Molokai and Lanai mostly cloudy under broken sc and cu, and Maui has similar conditions, with stable broken low clouds along the all of the lower slopes of Haleakala, and along the lower slopes of west Maui. The lower slopes of the Big Island, including the lower leeward slopes, have broken to overcast sc.
