Waipahu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced today that a new traffic signal installed at the intersection of Honowai Street and Waipahu Street was activated at 1 p.m. this afternoon, Monday, March 23, 2015.

In late 2009, a traffic study revealed that a traffic signal was warranted due to the number of vehicles and pedestrian crossings at Honowai and Waipahu Streets.  The intersection is in the middle of a residential community, in close proximity to Honowai Elementary and Waipahu Elementary Schools and near commercial shopping centers.

Design started in late 2013 and construction commenced in the fourth quarter of 2014.  The traffic signal was installed by Standard Electric, Inc. at an approximate cost of $400,000.  The traffic signal has been on blinking status since Friday of last week in anticipation of today’s activation.

Senator Clarence Nishihara and Councilmember Ron Menor were instrumental in advocating for this new traffic signal.  Senator Nishihara and Councilmember Menor worked with the Waipahu Neighborhood Board and the Department of Transportation Services to prioritize the installation of the traffic signal for the safety of their community members.  Director of Transportation Services Mike Formby credited both men for their strong advocacy on behalf of their constituents.

Senator Nishihara, Councilmember Menor, Director Formby, and State Representatives Henry J.C. Aquino and Ty J.K. Cullen attended the introduction and activation of the traffic signal this afternoon.
