Waimanu Street opens to two-way traffic

Kaka'ako – Waimanu Street is open to two-way traffic between Penascola Street and Pi'ikoi Street, the result of a privately funded construction project.

The two-way design will improve traffic circulation around Ala Moana Shopping Center, through Kaka'ako, and on Ala Moana Boulevard, and provide direct access to businesses and residences. It will provide greater connectivity for bicycles in an area that will feature a major rail hub, and encourage connectivity consistent with complete streets principles.

"This project will benefit O'ahu drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, and bus and rail riders for years to come, with a complete streets design that will make travelling more pleasant for everyone," said Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

The project was completed by Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company and funded by General Growth Properties. The plans were approved by the Department of Planning and Permitting in consultation with the Department of Transportation Services.

Waimanu Street will commence two-way operations between Piikoi and Pensacola Streets at tomorrow, November 14, 2014.

This section of Waimanu Street was previously a four-lane, one-way eastbound roadway. Click here for Google map showing former alignment.

Details about the new Waimanu Street lanes:

·       At the intersection with Piikoi Street, one westbound lane will open on Waimanu Street with the retention of on-street parking.

·       As the new westbound lane on Waimanu Street approaches Pensacola, it expands to two lanes, with the left lane a shared through and left-turn lane.

·       Both westbound lanes on Waimanu at Pensacola continue through to Queen Street.

·       Eastbound lanes on Waimanu Street will have one left-turn only lane onto Piikoi Street, two through lanes to Ala Moana Center and one right-turn only lane onto Piikoi Street.

·       Bike sharrows have been added to Waimanu Street eastbound to Piikoi Street.

With this change in operation, motorists traveling makai (southbound) on Piikoi Street may turn right onto Waimanu Street; and motorists leaving the Ala Moana Center may travel straight through onto Waimanu Street via one lane.   Mauka bound (northbound)  motorists on Piikoi Street will not be able to make a left-turn onto Waimanu Street.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists are advised to exercise caution around Waimanu Street as these changes are being implemented.   Please observe all traffic signals and modified roadway striping.
