Donation sites announced for "Sew a lei for Memorial Day"

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced the locations of collection sites for individuals and groups wishing to donate lei to decorate the graves of veterans at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl for Memorial Day.

"Every year thousands of volunteers from across O'ahu sew lei to honor the fallen with an incredible display of aloha," said Mayor Caldwell.  "Once again the city will accept lei donations at parks and fire stations across the island.  Mahalo to everyone who participates, we couldn't do it without your kokua."

The lei can be dropped off at designated community parks and fire stations on O'ahu, and the Parks Permit Office in Honolulu, during specific periods of time Friday, May 23 or Saturday, May 24.

This unique community project aims to collect 38,000 lei for placement on individual grave markers.  All lei must be made of fresh flowers or ti leaves and must measure 20-24 inches before tying (lei must be tied).
