Monday, May 12, 2014 Contact: Christian Hellum, Department of Customer Services 768-3496 City responds to surge in demand for Reconstructed Vehicle permits Honolulu Following increased demand for inspections of modified vehicles to obtain a Reconstructed Vehicle permit, as a prerequisite for successful completion of vehicle safety inspection, the City and County of Honolulu has now successfully cleared a temporary backlog of permit applications. Although there have been no recent changes implemented to regulations pertaining to vehicle modifications, a new electronic system utilized by safety inspectors since last fall causes inspectors to adhere more strictly to existing rules. "The city has responded decisively to address the temporary surge in demand for permit applications, and I am pleased to note that we are now able to accommodate "drive-ins" and have the ability to schedule appointments," said Sheri Kajiwara, Director of the city's Department of Customer Services. "The rules governing reconstructed vehicles can be complex, so we recommend interested parties contact the inspection facility for guidance, based on the make and model of their vehicle, as well as the type of modification made." Reconstructed Vehicle permits are required for vehicles that have been modified from the original manufacturer's specifications. Residents needing assistance with Reconstructed Vehicle permits may call 733-2542 or visit the inspection facility, located at 1112 Kapahulu Avenue (under the overpass adjacent to the King Street, Waialae Avenue and Kapahulu Avenue intersection).
