April 22, 2014 Contact: Jesse Broder Van Dyke (Mayor Caldwell) 768-6928 Grace Hew Len (Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam) 473-2926 Mayor Caldwell to open new motor vehicle registration office at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Honolulu City Council approved the new service last week Pearl Harbor - Mayor Kirk Caldwell will host a grand opening event for a new Satellite Vehicle Registration Office at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22. The opening comes as a result of the Honolulu City Council's unanimous approval of a master agreement between the city and Navy Region Hawaii at a full council meeting this past Wednesday, April 16th. The new Satellite Vehicle Registration Office will operate on a limited twice-weekly schedule and provide a full range of motor vehicle registration services. It will be open to everyone with base access including members of the military, their families, and civilian employees at the base. "This new location will benefit military personnel while also reducing the lines for Oahu residents at all Satellite City Halls," said Sheri Kajiwara, Director of the city's Customer Services Department. "Motor vehicle transactions account for 70 percent of Satellite City Hall business, and transactions involving military personnel can be especially time-intensive as these often involve out-of-state transfers, requiring additional forms and signatures." Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam was selected for its central location accessible from other military facilities on Oahu. The facility will be located on base at the Club Pearl Complex. It will operate Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m to 4:30 p.m. as part of a one-year pilot program in partnership with Navy Region Hawaii. If successful, the program could be extended. The Navy is providing the facility and the city is transferring existing personnel, meaning there is no additional ongoing cost to provide this service. The Satellite Vehicle Registration Office at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam will handle transactions related to initial vehicle registration; out-of-state permits; transfer of ownership; replacement of Hawaii plates and/or registration emblems; duplicate Honolulu titles and registrations; the ordering of special plates, Veteran's plates, and Organizational plates; as well as junking and storage. - END - |
