Honolulu Police Department Award Recipients Honolulu Police Chief Louis M. Kealoha presented awards to outstanding employees and a civilian during a ceremony at Windward Mall today.  Corporal John Dorsey was awarded the Honolulu Police Department's (HPD) Warrior Silver Medal of Valor for risking his life to save a man who was trapped in a burning vehicle after it collided with a utility pole.  As flames were shooting out of the back of the vehicle, Corporal Dorsey managed to get the driver's door open, but the male was unresponsive and the vehicle's airbag had deployed.  He was able to get the male out of the vehicle just before it erupted into flames.  The male was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Officer Jeffrey Fleigner was recognized as the Employee of the Quarter and for his dedication to duty.  Officer Fleigner is assigned to District 3 (Pearl City).  In the fourth quarter of 2011, he made 98 arrests and issued 337 citations.  This was in addition to his other duties that included prisoner transports, patrol calls for service, and paper transfers.  His supervisor says that Officer Fleigner excels in working independently without direct instructions; he conducts complete and thorough investigations and is a team player who is always willing to help his fellow employees. Mr. Walter Jennings Fowler received the Civilian Medal of Valor for stopping an armed robbery attempt and detaining the suspect until the police arrived.  Mr. Jennings Fowler was a patron at a restaurant in Moiliili when a male entered the establishment and threatened the restaurant manager with a knife while demanding money.  Mr. Jennings Fowler noticed the commotion and was able to disarm the male. The following Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Planning Group members each received the Bronze Medal of Merit for their 17 months of work preparing for the APEC meetings: Assistant Chief Clayton Kau Captain Mark Ward Lieutenant Benjamin Mahi Lieutenant Clyde Yamashiro Sergeant Kevin Kadooka Sergeant Benjamin Moszkowicz Sergeant Dan Nakasato Sergeant Ronald Taira Corporal Jack Wright Jr. Officer Minh-Hung Nguyen The following Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Planning Group members each received Certificates of Merit for their work in preparing for the APEC meetings: Detective Jeffrey-James Lee Sergeant Maylene Kellim Sergeant Carl Roth Officer Aaron Miura Officer Sharie Souza Ms. Bonnie Ann Lee Sergeant Henry Roberts received a Certificate of Merit for saving the life of a suicidal male who was threatening to jump from a building.  Sergeant Roberts talked to the male for approximately two hours before the male agreed to come down and get medical attention. Ms. Katherine Yoro received a Civilian Certificate of Merit for being a perceptive neighbor who alerted police to a group of possible burglary suspects.  Through her quick thinking, three people were arrested for burglary and drug offenses. The District 6's (Waikiki) Bicycle Unit was awarded the Unit of the Quarter.  The unit was recognized for its dedication to duty in reducing beach thefts in Waikiki and cracking down on all violations.  In November and December of last year, the Bicycle Unit's statistics included 53 liquor violation citations or arrests, 187 moving and miscellaneous citations, 28 warrant arrests, and responses that resulted in 172 written cases.  This was in addition to other duties, including staffing eight parades, two Sunset on the Beach events, and three holiday elementary school events.  The members include the following officers: Roger Wong Gregg Arii Marc Christopher Brandt Bryant Ho Kevin Kaneshiro Chris Matsumoto Jordan Moya Paul Navares Keoni Tamanaha Mienrado Tolentino Jr. Christian Trent Austin Yoshino
