CITY BUS SERVICE TURNS 40 TODAY             (Tues., March 1, 2011)—The City's awarding-winning public bus service turns 40 years old today. TheBus began under Mayor Frank Fasi on March 1st, 1971, and has expanded to become the respected Honolulu institution that thousands of commuters rely on every day. "From its modest first headquarters under a banyan tree that is now the site of a child-care facility, TheBus has grown and expanded to include routes serving the entire island," City Transportation Director Wayne Y. Yoshioka said. "There's no denying that TheBus has developed into a venerable and reliable transportation necessity for Oahu.  I congratulate our Public Transit Division, led by Division Chief James Burke and the Oahu Transit Services, Inc. led by President and General Manager Roger Morton, for the great job they are doing to serve our transit and para-transit riders."
