Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Sun, 06 Feb 2011 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC February 06 2011.

A front has remained nearly stationary northwest of Kauai for the past several hours.

Broken to overcast high, cirrus, clouds cover the main Hawaiian islands from Maui northwestward and obscure lower level features. There are showery broken low clouds over the coast and lower slopes of the Big Island of Hawaii from just south of Hilo town to South Point to Hawaiian oceanview estates. Skies are nearly clear elsewhere on the Big Island. Radars show numerous light to moderate showers over the southeast part of the Big Island and over Kauai and Niihau and isolated showers over Lanai, Molokai and southwest Oahu.

Low cloud motions southeast of the Big Island are from the east southeast at 15 to 20 mph. There are scattered low clouds immediately upstream of the Big Island. Low cloud motions elsewhere upstream of the islands are obscured by high clouds.

A 100 to 180 mile wide band of showery broken to overcast low clouds is east of a line from 28°N 150.5°W to 230 miles east of Hilo to 13°N 150°W. The part of the band east of the Big Island has moved west at 15 to 20 mph over the past 7 hours.

A frontal cloud band is northwest of a line from 30°N 154°W to about 150 miles northwest of Kauai to 20°N 166°W to 14°N 180°W. Cirrus has been spilling over the southeast edge of the frontal band north of 22°N, so it is difficult to find the edge of the front in that area on satellite imagery. Another frontal band that trails south from a storm low is merging with the first front. The back edge of the combined band runs from 30°N 164°W to 25°N 167°W. The part of the frontal band north of 22°N contains overcast layered clouds with tops to 42000 ft. The part of the band farther south is 200 miles wide and contains overcast low clouds.
