Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 05 Jan 2011 23:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 0500 UTC January 06 2011.

The first cold front of 2011, and the first of at least three fronts scheduled to arrive over the next two weeks, is just northwest of Kauai and moving to the southeast at 20 mph. This is the same front that 24 hours ago was about 700 miles northwest of Kauai. Judging by the appearance of the 120 mile wide frontal cloud band, there should be showers along the leading edge followed perhaps by light rain. Cloud tops within the band range from 6000 to 11000 feet.

The front is more active from 24°N 157°W northeastward through 30°N 152°W where there is a line of broken thunderstorms with tops near 40000 feet. The broken fair weather cumulus clouds behind the front are moving to the south at 25 to 30 mph, which indicates that the front should be pushed all the way down the island chain.

Mostly clear skies are the rule over the smaller islands ahead of the front. The only low clouds of note are over the Big Island and over waters northeast and south of the island. Subsidence in advance of the front should flush out these clouds as was the case over the smaller islands. Low cloud tops over and near the Big Island are below 12000 feet.

Broken high clouds are moving to the east at about 65 mph in advance of the front. Cirrus tops are near 30000 feet.
