Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Mon, 03 Jan 2011 06:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1200 UTC January 03 2011.

Water vapor imagery shows an upper level low centered near 11°N 168°W, about 950 miles southwest of the main Hawaiian islands, moving west at 35 mph. Extensive high and mid level layered clouds covers a large area between the low and the main Hawaiian islands and areas between 20°N and 10°N eastward to 140°W. Isolated embedded thunderstorms are within the area around 350 miles east through southeast of the low, with cloud tops to 40000 feet.

Elsewhere across the area, a southwesterly upper level jet is positioned across the northwest corner of the area, west through north of Midway atoll, dragging thick layers of mid level clouds ahead of a slowly approaching cold front located near 30°N at the dateline.

Over the main Hawaiian islands, broken low clouds cover the windward sides of all islands from Kauai to Maui. Patchy low cloud decks are also found spread across the windward coastal waters from Kauai to Oahu and also northeast of Maui. Skies over the Big Island are largely cloud free, with a small patch of low clouds just west of the Kona coastline and a larger band of showery low clouds between 5 and 25 miles off the windward Big Island coastline. The clouds free from terrain were moving west at about 30 mph, with maximum low cloud tops at 9000 feet.
