Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message

Hawaiian Islands Satellite Interpretation Message
Wed, 05 Jan 2011 12:30:00 -0600

Based on data through 1800 UTC January 05 2011.

Since late last night cloud cover has increased over the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii, decreased over the leeward side of the Big Island and changed little elsewhere around the main Hawaiian islands. Broken to overcast low clouds cover the windward side of the Big Island southeast of a line from Laupahoehoe to South Point. The clouds extend upslope to about 5000 feet of elevation. Clouds are isolated elsewhere on the Big Island. Clouds are isolated over Maui county and Oahu except for patchy broken low clouds near Hana. Broken low clouds cover most of Kauai and Niihau.

Low cloud motions east of the Big Island are from the east at 15 mph, decreasing to east at 5 mph near Kauai. Showery broken to overcast low clouds extend 140 miles east of the Big Island of Hawaii with more broken to overcast low clouds from 270 to 470 miles upstream. These clouds are part of a 210 mile wide band of showery low clouds south of a line from Laupahoehoe to 20°N 148°W. The clouds over Kauai and Niihau are part of a weakly organized 60 mile wide line that extends north northeast from over the islands.

A frontal cloud band is north of a line from 30°N 155°W to 27°N 160°W, 330 miles north of Kauai, to 24°N 170°W to 24°N 180°W. The part of the band northeast of 27°N 160°W is 180 miles wide and contains overcast layers and isolated cumulonimbus clouds with tops to 45000 feet. The rest of the band is 150 miles wide and contains showery broken to overcast low clouds. Over the past 6 hours, the part of the front northwest of Kauai has moved southeast at 20 mph.
