Royal Hawaiian Band concert features John Cruz
and debuts Michael-Thomas Foumai's 'The Fantastic Voyage'

Honolulu - Local performer John Cruz will join the Royal Hawaiian Band at a free concert at the Hawaii Theatre, on Thursday, September 25, at 7 p.m.  Hula Halau Ka Lâ 'Ônohi Mai O Ha'eha'e, Kawaiolaonâpûkanileo, the University of Hawai'i-Mânoa Hawaiian Chorus, and the Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus Kûho'okahi Ensemble, will also perform at Ma O Ke Kai E Pili Ai Kâkou or The Ocean Connects Us All.

The Royal Hawaiian Band will debut The Fantastic Voyage, a new band composition honoring the Hôkûle'a and its current voyage around the world.  The concert also inaugurates an annual event for Downtown Honolulu in the spirit of Aloha Festivals held this month.

The Fantastic Voyage, composed by Michael-Thomas Foumai, was commissioned by the Royal Hawaiian Band to commemorate Mâlama Honua, the worldwide voyage of the Hôkûle'a and Hikianalia.  The Polynesian voyaging canoes are promoting the global movement toward a more sustainable world.  The composition offers listeners the sounds of seafaring, adventure, and heroic triumphs of spirit.

Michael-Thomas Foumai has been honored with numerous awards and is recognized as one of the new generation of notable young American composers.  He has recently been named the Music Teachers National Association Composer of the Year and was selected by Maestro Lorin Maazel as winner of the Composer's Forum Competition at the Castleton Festival.  He has been commissioned by the Composers Conference at Wellesley College, Michigan Music Teachers Association, and has served as composer-in-residence of the 2014 Alabama Orchestra Association.

John Cruz has distinguished himself as one of Hawaii's most talented artists for his original compositions and his warm, heartfelt melodies, and soulful vocals.  He has won Nâ Hôkû Hanohano Awards for his albums Acoustic Soul and One of These Days.

The event is free and open to the public.  Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.  For information, call the Royal Hawaiian Band at 922-5331.
