Monday, August 18, 2014 Mayor Caldwell's press office, 768-5768 (Jesse Broder Van Dyke mobile: 489-0341) Volunteer contact: Mark Kikuchi, Chief of Traffic Engineering, DTS, 768-8321.     **TOMORROW** Mayor Caldwell, city and state team up to put Kalihi pedestrians "On the Spot" for safety   Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell and the City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) are partnering with the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation's Walk Wise Hawai'i to promote pedestrian safety by putting pedestrians "On the Spot" tomorrow, August 19th  from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. along North King Street in Kalihi.   "We all need to work together, both pedestrians and drivers, both city and state, to prevent accidents," said Mayor Caldwell.    "What better place to reach pedestrians with safety tips than on the sidewalks before they cross the streets," said Mike Formby, Director of Transportation Services.   The city and state team will be at three locations along North King Street, between Richard Lane and Kalihi Street, educating pedestrians, from keiki to kupuna, before they cross the streets. The Honolulu Police Department, AARP, and Elder Care Program Kôkua Kalihi Valley will also be on-hand to assist at Honolulu's first-ever "On the Spot" pedestrian safety event.   One of the core messages of Walk Wise Hawai'i is that pedestrians should look left, look right, then look left again before entering a crosswalk, and continue to look and watch for cars until they finish crossing.  To help promote pedestrian safety, Walk Wise Hawai'i and DTS will also be handing out pedestrian safety tools such as blinking lights and glow-in-the-dark bracelets that pedestrians can use to increase their visibility to motorists.      -END-
