Thursday, May 8, 2014 Contact: Christian Hellum, 768-3496 Memorial Day Poster Contest winners recognized Honolulu - Mayor Kirk Caldwell presented certificates to the nine winners of the Mayor's Memorial Day Poster Contest at an awards ceremony and reception held yesterday at Honolulu Hale. More than 400 students from public and private schools throughout the state entered the contest. All winning posters are on exhibit on the third floor of Honolulu Hale through May 30, 2014. The artwork of the first-place winners will also appear on posters encouraging the public to provide lei to decorate graves at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 26, at 8:30 a.m. Thirty-eight thousand lei are needed for placement on the graves of veterans at Punchbowl, in memory of their service to our country. The winners in each grade category are as follows: GRADES K - 4 First Place Chrissy Hori, Grade 3, Maemae Elementary School
Second Place Amber Nosis, Grade 1, August Ahrens Elementary School Third Place Kaylen Ariola, Grade 3, St. Joseph School GRADES 5 - 8 First Place Leya Leliaert, Grade 7, Kapolei Middle School Second Place Teah Laupapa, Grade 7, Kapolei Middle School Third Place Bryant Sadiarin, Grade 8, St. Joseph School GRADES 9-12 First Place Suky Zhao, Grade 10, Roosevelt High School Second Place Emily Moran, Grade 12, Roosevelt High School Third Place Christian Estavillo, Grade 12, Farrington High School The contest judges were Cindy Ing, First Hawaiian Bank; Jana Yamamoto, Menehune Mac; and Kendra Medeiros, Department of Parks and Recreation, City and County of Honolulu. - END - |
