Honolulu to honor former U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka

 

Honolulu – Mayor Kirk Caldwell of the City and County of Honolulu will pay tribute to former United States Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka at an event this Friday, September 12, at 5 p.m. at Mission Memorial Auditorium, located on the grounds of Honolulu Hale. 

 

Entitled "Ho'ohano I Kou Ho'oko'ana Nui" ("Honoring Your Great Achievements"), this event will honor Senator Akaka, the only Kânaka Maoli ever to serve in the United States Senate.  

 

Mayor Caldwell will offer opening remarks for the gathering, followed by personal tributes from the Senator's family, friends, associates and community members, musical tributes, and a screening of the Emmy Award-winning short film "Akaka: The Aloha Statesman" produced by Hawaii News Now.

 

Dignitaries including President Barack Obama have offered congratulatory letters for this event. 

 

Senator Akaka celebrates his 90th birthday this Thursday.  He was born September 11, 1924.
