Wednesday, April 16, 2014 Contact:          Jesse Broder Van Dyke, 768-6928                        Ken Aronowitz, 258-9050     Holocaust Remembrance Day to be held on April 27   Honolulu – Mayor Caldwell will take part in a Holocaust Remembrance Day service on Sunday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. at Temple Emanuel-El, 2550 Pali Highway.  At the remembrance service, Mayor Caldwell will present a proclamation declaring April to be Holocaust Remembrance Month.    "This is a somber day, but it is important that we remember," said Mayor Caldwell.  "Remaining aware of the unfathomable evil humans are capable of helps to ensure that in the future people step forward to stop something like this from ever happening again.  It's important for people of all faiths and backgrounds to come together, morn the great loss, and say never again."    In Israel, April 27 is known as Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day).  Since 1953, Yom HaShoah has been Israel's official day of commemorating the six million Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust.  April 27 also marks the beginning of the Days of Remembrance, a week that has been set aside for the people of Honolulu to remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on the need to respect all people, which will run through May 4th.   -END-
