TEMPORARY BYPASS PIPE EXPOSED IN ALA WAI

(Sun., May 6, 2012) –A portion of the temporary black sewer pipe used as a result of the Beachwalk force main break in 2006 surfaced yesterday in the Ala Wai Canal.

The pipe is neither leaking nor a health risk.  An air bubble lifted a section of the 5,000 foot-long pipe and the anchors to the surface exposing approximately 100 feet of pipe.

The majority of the sewage flows in the rehabilitated original force main, with only a small amount going through the temporary black bypass pipe.

The City informed the Ala Wai Boat Harbor that a portion of the temporary sewer line within the Ala Wai Canal had floated to the surface near the Convention Center. The City is also notifying DLNR.  The City will mobilize in-house and contractor workforce Monday to resubmerge the pipe.
