MAYOR WELCOMES STUDENTS ON 'GROUNDHOG JOB SHADOW DAY'  (Thurs., Feb. 2, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today welcomed nearly 200 high school students to Honolulu Hale today to "shadow" City employees and learn about their jobs and potential career opportunities as part of "National Groundhog Job Shadow Day." "It's wonderful to have so many bright, responsible young adults spend time with our dedicated City workers as they map out their futures," Carlisle said. "This is a great opportunity for them to experience the working world up close and in person." National Groundhog Job Shadow Day is a national campaign that gives young people a new perspective on their studies through hands-on learning and a one-day mentoring experience, and coincides with the Groundhog Day ritual of American folklore. The visit to Honolulu Hale was organized by Junior Achievement of Hawaii, which encourages students to graduate from high school, continue their education and become well-prepared for the workplace. Eight City departments and the City Council participated in the program and welcomed the students into their offices and other work spaces.
