NO PLANS TO EXTEND GENERAL EXCISE TAX(Wed., Jan. 25, 2012)—Mayor Peter Carlisle will not seek at this time an extension of the General Excise Tax surcharge to pay for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project. A headline in Wednesday's Honolulu Star-Advertiser incorrectly implied that the mayor is considering that option. The City and the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation are working collaboratively with the Federal Transit Administration to demonstrate additional safeguards in the project's contingency plan in the event of unforeseen economic events. -30- |
