MAYOR SALUTES VETERANS AND HEALTH CARE SERVICES (Thurs., Nov. 3, 2011)—Mayor Peter Carlisle today honored all U.S. service veterans and saluted the health care services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs Spark M. Matsunaga Medical Center in Honolulu. At a ceremony in his office, Carlisle proclaimed November 3, 2011 VA Pacific Islands Health Care System Day in the City and County of Honolulu, and presented certificates of recognition to nine veterans from the Wounded Warriors Project to honor their dedicated service and sacrifices.  "Our veterans have made incredible sacrifices for our nation, and it is important that we all recognize, appreciate and honor their service," Carlisle said. U.S. flags and service flags are also displayed in front of Honolulu Hale to honor our nation's veterans, and red and blue lights illuminate the grounds.             The VA Pacific Islands Health Care system provides a broad range of medical care services to an estimated 127,600 veterans throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Islands, including more than 12,000 who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. -30- Media contact: Louise Kim McCoy, Mayor's Office, 768-7798.
