                                ENV RESPONDS TO BERETANIA SSO

(Sunday, Nov. 14 , 2010) – The City's Department of Environmental Services responded this evening to a sanitary sewer overflow on Beretania Street next to Aala Park.

The call came in at 5:50 p.m.  An ENV crew arrived at the scene at 6:07 p.m. and secured the site at 6:35 p.m.

Grease clogged a 10-inch terra cotta pipe.  An estimated 2,250 gallons of untreated wastewater came out of manhole with approximately 850 gallons making its way into a storm drain.  The ENV crew was able to divert 1,250 back into a nearby manhole while recovering another 150 gallons with a Vactor truck.

ENV notified the state Department of Health.  The affected area was cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.  Signing and water sampling will begin at first light on Monday morning.
