CALDWELL: CITY AWARDED FOR EXCELLENT FINANCIAL REPORTING

(Thurs., Sept. 16, 2010)—Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell today announced that the City and County of Honolulu has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

The Certificate recognizes excellence in the City's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2009. The award is the group's highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management, according to the Association.

"Once again, the City is being recognized for excellence in carefully managing and accounting for taxpayer money, and that's something we should all be proud of," Caldwell said. "Our high bond ratings, clean audits and accounting awards make it very clear that we are serious about managing public money prudently and transparently."

The City's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the Association's high standards, including demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the document.

Earlier this month, the Association presented the City with a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the effectiveness of the City's annual budget as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications tool.
